.308 Issue with wierd barrel

I just want to run this by some other competitive shooters. I have a new barrel on my F-TR rifle this spring. Bartlein 5-R, 1-10 twist in medium palma to make weight with my rifle. I have firefirmed 200 pieces of palma brass and worked up a good load with the Varget and 185 juggernauts so far. Normal break-in process, accuracy of the bench and at 300 was very good while testing.

I cleaned the rifle prior to the long range match this weekend, getting lots of carbon out on the patches, I mean lots. 20-30 patches of black soot, so much so that I even took a brush to it. I let the rifle soak overnight after the brushing with both Shooters Choice and Kroil as part of my normal cleaning process. Cleaned out the Kroil with dry patches and then lighter fluid to dry the barrel.

Fast forward to Saturday at 1000 yards. I dial my zero onto the rifle and send a couple down range during the sighter period, both sighters were a few minutes high but I knew I had to foul the barrel some before I made any adjustments. I send the third shot down range, target goes down and then back up as a miss. I think maybe the bullet was just over the top, so I come down 2 minutes and send a couple more, both coming back as misses. The pits call back saying I am way low. I come back up to my original zero setting and start hitting the target. I shot about 10 rounds more refining my zero and thought I was good to go. I start shooting for record and vertical is all over the place for another 10 sots or so. Literally, I couldn't hold the 9 ring in elevation for the better part of the first string.

Match #2 of the day was better as far as elevation was concerned but not to my liking. Match #3 was better yet, and then I shot the team match for Match #4 and my team mate commented on how tight my elevation was. I scored 193 with a decent X count, losing a few points to elevation just out but mostly wind and hold wobble. Conditions were the best I have ever shot at 1000, high humidity, decent light, steady light wind. I came away feeling prety good that I had the rifle figured out. I clean the rifle when I get home, same amount of black soot for 20 patches or so, then I brush 10 strokes and soak for a while, no copper or carbon left.

Day #2 is palma with unlimited sighters at 800. I dial my zero, send a few to foul the barrel. Just like day #1, both land a little high and then I send 3 more into the bottom of the target frame, just barely on paper. I adjust up a couple minutes and then I start hitting the top again. After about 10 fouler/sighters, I start for record. Refer to the sentence above, just like day #1, I continue to spread the shots vertically for another 8 shots or so finishing with an abissmal 800 yard score. 900 and 1000 were better despite tough winds and I would have won if I wouldn't have lost those points at 800.

My question to those who have experienced a barrel that needs 25 or more shots through it before it settles down is this: Does it get better? I now have about 400 rounds through it. If this is what the barrel is, I will work around it. I plan to not clean between days on two day events as well. I will, albeit unhappily, having to shoot about 25 rounds after cleaning the night before I go to matches. I will use the opportunity to fireform some more brass and use up some left over lots of bullets. I have never had a barrel that needed this many foulers, 5-10 yes, but 25?
Thanks,
Scott

I haven't seen a barrel that takes 25 rounds to foul it......I usually run 5 or so in mine and they are ready to go.

I haven't seen a barrrel take so many to settle down, that is the purpose of the post.

DId you clean the barrel between day one and two??
Yes, I cleaned the barrel the same between days as I did before the match. I clean all my match rifles the same way. I push patches of Shooters Choice through until they come out clean, then I let the barrel soak, often overnight or longer, pushing more patches through until all clear. I often then soak in Kroil overnight after there is no more effect from the SC. I rarely brush unless needed. I also rarely give a light scrubbing of JB, but have not yet on this barrel.

It might just be the nature of this barrel to run best dirty, I just haven't experienced it before.

I have one like that. Takes a minimum of 12-15 rounds to settle down. I simply arrive fouled and do not clean until the weekend is over. Frankly I have gone 300-400 rounds without cleaning and shot as well as I ever do.
I used to think it was the barrel warming up (a la small bore) but now believe it is all fouling. Never have much copper to remove though.

I'm not the caliber of shooter as most, but it seems like my barrel doesn't settle down until I have almost 30 shots through it....at this point, I don't clean until I have at least 100 rounds through it

I've got a Dasher that has the same issue - takes 10-15 before it becomes reliable, but the scores and X counts skyrocket at ~25-30.

Headed out in the morning to pre-foul it before next weekend's match.

As it has been pointed out already you have a dirty girl for a barrel which I think is the best . I have one as well , I spray some kroil down the bore to keep the moisture out between matches and when I go to shoot just patch it out and fire away. Every 400 rounds I'll clean it out with wipeout and let it sit for 2 days or so

I can understand that a barrel might need some fouling to settle down, but moving 6-10 MOA down, then up in 4-5 shots threw me for a loop.

Scott,
I'd definitely call Bartlein about that. They are good folks and I'd bet that they would want to make sure you are happy. You could just shoot he 25 foulers the night before every match, but think of the cost, time spent(loading AND shooting) and increased barrel wear you are going to incur over the life of that barrel. Wouldn't be worth it to me. Good luck, and let us know what happens with it.

Yep mines a "dirty girl" too. 6X47 Lapua. I never go to a match with less than 25 rounds on it.
I've pretty much found this to be true across the 4 barrels I've had on this gun. But man, once the barrel loads up, she's a hummer.

This makes a good argument for those who overclean. I use to clean after every match. But, I feel your pain in getting a barrel to settle down and shoot straight. I've never had one take 30 shots but 10-15 isn't out of the question.

I stopped cleaning and found in real world shooting, 350-500 rounds can be shot before you have do any cleaning. Then, I don't scrub in down to bare metal. Run a few parched thru, get out the buildup, and leave the micro groves and cracks dirty.

Then 5 shots and it's ready to go another 500 rounds.

I'll throw in another for the 10-15 rounds before my bartlein 5r 223 settles down. And looking back I'm starting to wonder if it takes a few more to settle down.

Also, just wondering what shooters choice you use to soak overnight, I'm looking for a different cleaner to use.

I would have a talk with whomever 'smithed the rifle for you. I'd be looking at things like the chamber, brass, neck tension. I'd have the bedding checked, and make sure the action screws are properly torqued.

I have a .308 Bartlien 5R with a 1 in 13 twist. My elevation is consistent from a cold barrel. I am shooting the "old" Sierra 2155's.

Good luck getting things worked out.

The barrel is being bore-scoped by a friend right now. As an experiment, I shot the remaining 9 rounds of ammo left from this weekends match during our league tonight at 600. I dialed my 600 yard zero, gave a minute of wind and placed all 9 shots in <.5MOA in the top half of the X and 10 ring at 600. The barrel had about 80 rounds through it before the test. The barrel definitely shoots well dirty. I will let you know what the bore-scope says.

As an experiment, shoot the rifle for a few matches....like 350-400 rounds without cleaning. I bet you'll get great results and sorry if that doesn't fit into your notion of proper barrel cleaning regimen. :D But, the results on paper are always the best guide.

I have never had a barrel quite that bad before but some of my best did take up to 12 shots to settle down. Once they settled down, I could use them for 5 day competitions before I cleaned them again and they just got better and better.

Well, ya know, it is gonna cost you a bit more to dirty one up when it likes being "loaded" and obviously I would prefer to have one that shoots 5 shots and GO, but it's NOT a "bad" barrel if you shoot 25 then it starts hitting Xs. My experience has been that when you have one like this, it'll go longer without having to be cleaned.
Yours does sound a bit too weird though. When I talk about settling down, I'm talking about moving from somewhere inside or minimally outside the 10 to the X. From the top to the bottom of the target is another matter.
