.308 in 1000 yard benchrest

It can be if you're willing to use bullets at the heavy end out of those available.

There's good reason though why most choose something smaller.

7mm has been getting a lot of good press recently, would be my choice were I starting from scratch.

Is .308 a competitive round in 1000 yard benchrest shooting

I shoot 308 in F-TR at 1000 yds. Certainly not bench rest shooting but we are shooting for a 5" X ring and a 10" ten ring. Compared to the 7mm at that range you get significantly more wind drift per MPH of wind variation. So small variations are going to open the group up more for a 308. Many guys including myself have dropped the old reliable 175SMK trying to get better performance. There are 2 groups from there, guys driving 155s very fast and guys pushing 185s (and a few shooting heavier bullets) using lower initial MVs for the better BC of the heavier bullet.

I'm staying with my 308 at 1000 in F-TR because I want to limit the insanity of my involvement in the arms race, but if I was trying to do BR or F-Open I'd be looking at a 7mm, probably a 7RSAUM. They seem to be the hot stick these days. (Admittedly the ones I've seen lately have had drivers in the outstanding or better category)

Go to some matches see whats there, whats winning, and whats shooting the best groups, find out barrel twists, bullet ?'s etc. etc. make up your own mind based on stats not opinion's.
some clubs tend to run with 6mm's like the group i shoot with here in Montana, others .30 or 6.5's
what I'm getting at is some ranges some bullet's do better ( condiction's ) than others, so visit your local range and study up - it will save you ton's of $$$ and move you years ahead of yourself.

That's good advice. Local knowledge has greater value than what you might get from folks who shoot elsewhere, regardless of their level of expertise.

There's a great article on today's Bulletin about one fine shooter's move from sling shooting to F-TR you might find informative.

I will be as succinct as I can-----NO. Never seen one stand up and I've been at the game for quite a while. Seen many at the range--- for a few matches.
