308 chamber question?

and WHY???

308 Obermeyer Match GR
308 Palma
308 Palma 1995
308 Palma Bisley,Bisley Rule 150)
308 Winchester

Thanks Duey

A little background. The Bisley 150 chamber is a chamber designed for Palma rifles in regards to the International rule that states that all target rifles must chamber and fire a 7.62 NATO round safely. The Palma '95 chamber won't do this because it was designed so that Radway Green ammo would have about a .020 jump to the rifling,I think), a condition which leaves the throat a little short for the 7.62 NATO round. I might not be exact on these statements but I am close. I've used both of these chambers and the '95 Palma would let me seat the 155 SMK at 2.780 OAL and the Bisley 150 would let me seat it at 2.805. So, I would say that either of these two chambers would have a throat that is too short for 175 bullets unless you seat the bullet well into the case. I'm not sure about the Obermeyer and I am totally unfamiliar with the other two which seem like 'general use' chambers. If you could find a drawing on each that would be a lot of help. I think that the key thing would be finding one that the body wasn't overly generous in size and where the throat would let you seat the bullet with the base being about even with the neck/shoulder junction.

another chamber to consider is the Warner 95 Palma which has a longer throat. This is the reamer used for my F/TR rifle; it allows me to shoot the 185-190 bullets without seating too deep. With factory match ammo this will allow a jump for the sierra mk's which you would want anyway. JGS has a reamer print they can send you.

Are you passing out any cigars with that 'close'.

I have a number of customers shooting 168s in a 95 Palma chamber.

PT&G makes a nice 308 throating reamer that can be used with the 95 Palma or Bisley chamber reamers to open up the throats for longer and heavier bullets. The piloted throating reamer cost $69.00

Duey,

call Dave Kiff [ptg] and order either the palma bisley or .308 habu reamer and be done with it. both will pass the international rule and will shoot the 175 and the habu will shoot the 190.

in 2000, when the 'bisley 150' rule was in full force, both the US and CANADA tested to develope a reamer that work/passed.

BOB GAMBOA came up with [name unkown] and CANADA came up with the CANADIAN RG reamer. i was using the tried and true OBYMEYER [sic]2 1/2 min, 1987 reamer that BOOTS designed for the M-14.

given some thought, i had dave kiff cut a new reamer with the '87's dia. WITH A 1 1/2 min throat. it gave .018 more in OAL and passed the 150 check. the reason i did it is the '87 has a neck taper and all i needed to do to my guns was touch up the chambers. it shot very well at BISLEY with the issue RG ammo and my 190's - to 1200 yds. it shot 175's at .4 MOS, sd 7.2.
