308 barrel length

iv got a remmy 700 in 308 that has the factory heavy barrel (26") was thinking about having it cut down to 20" or 22". at this time i dont have the means to shoot over 300yds and im also not an insane "group" nazi. as long as they spin the steel or do a somwhat of a nice group im happy. i just enjoy to plink all day when i can.


guess what im asking is... there any reason i shouldn't cut it down?

Cutting to 20 will be fine. Thats what the 700 PSS(Police)
comes in. There are some SPS models @ 16.5". LDS

AR10s/SR-25s and M1As are being shot out to 1000 yds. in Service Rifle rifles using 175 gr. or 190 gr. bullets. They have 20-22" barrels. May not be your most precise long range weapon but would still make it there.
