308 accuracy

Well, not sure what the problem was. Just swapped some 175 SMKs for some 168 TMKs and loaded the TMKs with Varget at 2.850 (mag length) with 44-46 grains in .5 increments just as I did the 175 SMKs. First group with 44 grains was in a .5 group followed by 4 more groups from 44.5-46 grains inside .5 group as well. Only thing I did different besides change bullets was put the muzzle brake back on the barrel. I did clean the barrel prior to shooting it. Nothing else. Go figure. Not really concerned about why as much as happy for getting my old 308 back. The gun will do better once I give it 100%. Shot out to 500 achieving 2-3" groups.

I have had pretty good luck shooting the 168 TMK in my A.I AT 308 factory 12 twist 26 inch barrel. Lapua Brass, 44 grains IMR 4064 Federal match, 2.930 oal (.020 off lands).
The five 5 shot groups were shot off of a bench at 100 yards using a bipod and a rear bag. Rayev40w8.jpg

I have had great success with 45 grains of IMR 4320 and 168 TMKs. This recipe is a max load and I am using FC brass with Wolf primers. I was able to shoot within a dime at 300 yards.

I have a buddy that can shot a one hole group all day long from 300-500 yards.....but ain't no telling where it's gonna be!!

Anybody can say anything...If your rifle can shoot sub 1/2 moa "all day long" show us the targets..I would settle for 5 five shot groups on the same paper...if you can do that much I will take your word on the "all day long part." Ray

Now that is some great shooting.. Sure would like to see the target pictures. No way I can shoot that good.

284, Take the muzzle brake back off the rifle and see how it shoots. Sometimes that will change the harmonics on the barrel kinda like a barrel tuner. If it don't shoot as good that might be your culprit .

Funny you say that. I did take it off and that's when it shot terrible. Since then I screwed it back on and it's back to .5 groups. Funny thing is, it shot great from the factory before the brake. Then after the machining to install the brake, it shoots terrible with it off. Go figure. Not sure if that threaded thin barrel tip could make it happen or what occurs but it's obvious there's a difference.

My son has a Sendero with a brake on it. It shoots great with the brake but when you take the brake off POI is 6" high and to the left. I have never seen one have that drastic poi shift. The rifle still shoots sub moa without the brake though, just a drastic poi shift. Sometimes it seems as if the brake acts as a barrel tuner. It's kind of like the BOSS system that Browning used to install on their rifles. Good Luck on your load search. It will eventually come together. When you change powders and bullets from a proven load to working up a new load the search begins all over.

If you read previous replies in my quest for getting this 308 back on target, you'll see that I have. I found that the 168 TMK with 46 gr Varget gives me good accuracy. My 308 too shoot about 4" poi off without the brake on. Odd but not an issue if I know that. Thanks for your input. Appreciate it.

As for my post....here's the clue:

"one hole group"

ONE SHOT!!

Agreed. You're one of a handful of guys on the forums that I've seen post a pic of consecutive groups on the same target that are all under (some well under!) 1/2 MOA. Props to you. In my experience, it's also much harder to do that with a 308 than with some of the smaller calibers (6.5x47, 6PPC, etc). I can almost do as well as your target on a really good day with my 6.5 Creedmoor. I can't even come close with any of my 308s (which I've owned and messed with for much longer).
