.308/7.62 difference

a1

I think this is an urban myth generated on the internet for some unknown reason. The 7.62x51 has the same case dimensions as the commercial 308W and the military ammo is loaded to a nominal 50,000 psi, which is less than the 308W). There may be some throat differences between the two but nothing more than that. Many, if not all, match shooters will use both types.

That said, it's probably not a good idea to use hot 308W loads in some military rifles because of the higher pressures.

If you have any doubts, call DPMS and ask them.

I think that's another myth.

It's not a good idea because of the beating the gas system takes with HOT LOADS, and I see that some reloading manuals have Bolt Gun and Gas Gun Guides now just for that reason.
There's nothing like beating up a bolt carrier in a few hundred rounds and trying to get it fixed under warranty, only to be asked, "What kind of ammo have you used"?
