308 & 110-120gr Bullets

Hi All

Any one here us a 308 for hammering P Dogs with the light 110gr VmaX or 120 Class Plastic tips Varmint bullets?
Been using 223, 243AI and once my 7 Rem Mag for the long distance one's. I have a new FUN gun non match rifle in 308 that I think would be fun to take along to shoot Rats with. Just have never shot any of the light 30 cal bullets, before.

If you have shot any P Rats with a 308 and light Varmint bullets I would like to hear your experience wether its good or bad.

125 Speer TNT and 46 grs IMR 4895 shoot really well in my 308 and will mess up a groundhog. 125 Nosler ballistic tip with same load will ruin a deers day. ;D

Russ,
I would have to check the exact amount but used ~46gr 4064, Winchester primers, LC brass, and the 110vmax in my Garand and Perry. I was shooting in the unlimited class. Very impressive. my left handed buddy was not only fun to watch reload (like always) but managed a 100-7 for his prone rapid. Low recoil lots of fun, don't know what is would do to a pdog but it destroyed the xring at 200yds ;D
this would make a great youth hunting load I think. the year before I used 125 NBT but used 40gr of 4064. I figured it would be just enough to cycle the oprod. Ironically I got squadded with a guy that uses a double lugged M1 garand for his service gun. P100 and Distinguished. he told me I was on the right track, but drive those lighter bullets hard! The bass from the 40 gr was stacked right next to me, not so much last year! fortunately the competitors to my right and left were .30-06 shooters so finding my droppings were easy. FWIW, the guy I shot with also uses the 125NBTs,125 TNTs, and the 110 vmaxs interchangeably
Good luck to you,
Cheers,
Doc

When I was shooting the NRA XC I used the Hornady 130 for the 200 and 300 stages with good success and lower recoil than the 168's.

I don't know about 308 but 300 blk and 300 wm both make a mess. The win mag ws pushing real hard and they would split in half under 200 yards. After that they would just open up and air out. Really fun

Try the Speer 130 grain HP and a bunch of 3031! Very accurate, fast and will blow a Groundhog in half when you hit them in the middle! You can hear the hit from 300 yards! ;)

110Vmax loaded up to maximum velocity in a 308 will obliterate a Pdog. sometimes the destruction is so complete that you have to look hard to find parts. if your into the red-mist thing, this is a outstanding combination. :-D accuracy is excellent but the low BC limits the effective range. (basically the same as a 40g 223) I recommend a brake, or a suppressor so you can spot your own hits due to the recoil.

Awsome that was what I was wondering. That rifle is set up for a can. Just waiting on my approval from the BATF.

Hoping all this comes together before June when I might get a chance to go Doggin in ND. Now I need to find some bullets.... Dang

Thanks again.

In order of preference
- 125gr Speer TNT
- 110gr Hornady Vmax
- 120gr Nosler BT

The speer TNT is by far the most explosive bullet & usually the most accurate of the lot. They don't seem to care much about seating depth either. I normally load them to Magazine length or so the bullet is far enough into the case for a good grip then try some different powder weights. It's not very often I can't get a 1/2moa load even with a sporter rifle with these bullets. If these don't like your gun try the 110gr Vmax next.

Great, Thank you.

Any preferance on powder for the light bullets?

Im hoping you say 2520 since its ball powder and I have some on hand and I dont use it in my match rifle, just plinking fodder.

An "oldy but goody" that works real well in all my "light for caliber" loads in the .308 Winchester is IMR 3031. AA 2520 would work if you have the barrel length to avoid a big muzzle blast. You certainly could get enough in with its granular size. I use it in my .264 LBC AR/6.5 Grendel and it does a super job in them! Try it you may like it, let us know.

Are you guys using factory barrels with a 10T? Or are you using custom barrels with a slower twist with the 110-120gr bullets? Recently a friend was asking me about swapping his 308 barrel for a 22-250 for varmint shooting, when I saw this thread I told him about it. His concerns are using more powder then necessary to do the same job. I told him he would make up the difference by using the same barrel and brass but of course his reply was the .224 bullets are cheaper. I would appreciate hearing your opinions.

Swapping the caliber is a lot of work (money) initially. Right now light 22 cal bullets are in short supply. I really gets down to preference.

I have run them out of 10tw, 13tw and 15tw. 10 and 13 were .308 Winchester and the 15 is a 7.62X39(.308 bore). The only problem I had was attempting to push the 110 gr. V-Max hard in a 10tw .300 Ackley Magnum. The clouds created when the bullet came apart were spectacular! ::)

I'm using a krieger 13.5T with the 110 vmax. My biggest issue when working up loads was getting enough powder in the case. :-) IIRC, I'm using N133. the rifle was set up to run 155's for 1000yd so the Vmax load was just for kicks. If I was building a serious P-dog gun these days, I would focus hard on a 22-250Ai and the 53, or 60vmax. the 6-250 or 243AI with 70-90gr payloads are quite dramatic out to 600y.

the biggest problem with the 110v in a 308 is the really crappy BC. 350-400 yards is all its good for. don't get me wrong its a lot of fun, its just that a 53g Vmax wound up to 4000 in a 22-250AI will run circles around it.

I was thinking that a 15T would give more velocity and maybe a bit more distance than a 10T or 12T using 110-150gr bullets. According to JBM, The stability factor for a 150gr SMK bullet in a 15T barrel @ 3000fps is approximately 1.3
