300y F-TR What do I NEED?

We have a 300y F-TR shoot here once a month. I am thinking I want to give it a go. My rifle is capable of 1/2MOA, now weather or not I am capable of that on a regular basis is another ball of wax. I have a Harris bipod, good rear bag, and sling(I know nobody uses them, but I do have one). What else do I "need"? I really don't want to play "Keeping Up With the Joneses" , I do not plan on competing on any state or national level. I just want a bare bones setup so I can go play with the big kids. Also, how many rounds will I need for the match and sighters? Thanks.

If they are twenty shot matches, budget at least twenty-five per match, seventy-five per day. If they are fifteen shot matches, usually shot as unlimited sighters first match, two per match thereafter, budget at least sixty-five per day.

Get ahold of the match director and find out how many rounds and other details. Let him know you are coming and ask for help getting through your first match. I usually will find a experienced shooter to guide a first timer and give them some help getting started. You will find most people very helpful to new shooters if you ask for it.
Show up early and start asking questions right away. You will be fine.

+1 on above we also hold 300yd matches and you'll find lot of helpfull people who shoot them. another thing is a chamber flag if you dont have one if not someone will usually have a spare.

In an f-class event you'll need to score for others. To do so you'll need a spotting scope. You can always borrow somebody else's the first few times, but after that, do yourself a favor and pick up an inexpensive scope and tripod/stand. An inexpensive model will suffice, you don't need to see bullet holes, only the spotter and scoring disks.

Thanks fellas. So I need a mat, chamber flag, and no less than 75 rounds. I don't know who to contact. The matches here seem to be very informal from what I have seen, less than a hand full of guys shoot, 3 maybe 4. I have a spotting scope I can borrow, thanks for the heads up.

That's good advice. And, it's just nice to have your own equipment, even if folks are sharing

Somebody should know who runs the match. The president of the club should be able to help you find them.

WOW! That is a whole lot of info! Thanks. I won't be needing a cart since its a 300y match. We will be shooting on concrete from the regular line. I might drag out an old blanket for the first match, until I can get a mat. I hope I can scrounge up enough powder and primers to load up enough rounds to at least shoot a couple matches ::)

Hey Glen, if you are shooting on concrete, I would forgo the mat idea and find a carpet store and get a "throw away remnant" of a HIGH CUT PILE... A mat, at least most of the ones I have seen, would not be very comfortable at all on solid concrete! If you value your elbows, get a good carpet remnant!! AND they might just give you a piece!!

Ben, [br]
I shot 120 rounds yesterday with my Midway mat, on concrete. Still have my elbows and no obvious blood stains on the mat. ;) [br]
And, that was shooting my .300 WSM, 230 Hybrids at 2950. Mats are okay on concrete.

I need a new mat.. I am kind of a big guy and I need one that not only is long enough, it needs to be W-I-D-E too. I also want one that has a decent amount of "padding" to it.. Presently, I have one of those Sinclair mats and it has never really served me the way I would like... Any good suggestions?

This is the one I use. If you wait and watch Midway's bulletins, they occasionally discount to ~$35. I see a lot of these on the line. It has a zippered pocket, is pretty wide and, with the skirt up front, is fairly long. Padding is okay. I know some shooters who use an elbow pad on their right elbow. I wore one when I did demos for Barrett and it saved me some skin. ;) [br]

I use a thin flat elbow bag under my right elbow and it saves my hide. I only lose a few thousands every shot but it starts adding up by days end. I like it for position also.

From a few years of experience, I can give you a list of what you need:

Your shooting iron with a chamber flag.
Ammo (I always take several extra - nothing like having a dud)
Safety glasses
Hearing protection - double up
A hat - priceless in the pits when the spindle gets hit.
Water to drink
Lunch
A sense of humor
A clipboard or something similar to write against while scoring
A couple of pens

I bet you'll enjoy the experience. However, repeated competition can be addictive.
