300wsm new purchase

New guy here,

I have someone who’s letting go of a 300wsm and I’m wanting to get bigger punch than my current 6.5 creed for northern MN hunting for deer and potentially black bears. 300wsm seems like the right choice, not so sure now it seems not that popular so factory ammo might be a problem. I want a short action so that rules out some of the rather popular rounds. I thought 300wsm is pretty common but boy factory ammo is non-existent. Is there other options I should’ve be looking at in a short action? Prefer ammo in a 160-220 grain or so. Don’t need more than 30 cal bullet, as I’m not doing moose or grizzly.

btw want something with easy to get factory ammo.

you are searching at the end( hopefully) of a really long shortage of everything.
300wsm id great stock, but you are gonna have to hold your breath.

The 300 WSM is a excellent choice. I have had a number of them. They do almost the same thing as a 300 Win Mag. In a short action. I have never seen a 300 WSM that wasn't very accurate most will shoot (3) shot groups under 3/4" with any weight bullet from 150 to 180 grains. I have been on many Moose hunts that the 300 WSM was used and all were one shot kills most were over 850 pounds. Bullet choice is always the most important thing. for deer the 165gr Nosler Ballistic tip is a great choice. For Moose ,Bears & Elk the 180gr Nosler Partition is a good as any bullet made for large game. It is also very accurate Most rifles will shoot these way under 3/4". Everything is hard to find these days. Don't let that stop you from buying a great caliber. I have a lot of friends that have them. I wouldn't part with mine and none of them would sell theirs's either. Great Choice!!

A 308 will do what you want. 30 cal, short action, lots of ammo choices, good for deer and bear.
I have one but figures it’s a little slow on the factory load and wanted more power. My 308 does great with 150grain and it’s rather a brush gun and short and light.

I will be taking it home then! This settles it. He does have a box left if the 180grn as well just not sure what kind of bullet.

You won't be sorry. That's a great caliber. I have never seen a 300 WSM that didn't shoot like crazy. I have one in as Savage 111 it was a very cheap gun. $330.00 with a scope and hard gun case. Savage had a deal on them and I bought one for my father to go on a Moose hunt. When I was playing with loads I was getting groups under 1/2" with. It had a $10.00 Simmons scope on it. My farther shot 2 moose with and after he passed away I ended up with it back. After seeing how well it shot I had 3 friends that went right out and bought one and they all shot just ad good. I think there have been 8 moose killed we those 300WSM's in out crowd.

.300 WSM is a very common cartridge but the dearth of factory ammunition as well as brass has multiple reasons for occurring, all of which have been discussed here.

Using ammoseek as a search engine, I found 13 different listings for .300 WSM:

https://ammoseek.com/ammo/300wsm

The first one on their list is:

https://normashooting.com/shop/cali...r-bonded-polymer-tip-norma-bondstrike-qty-20/

Yes, the prices are higher than we were used to but the supply is shorter than we were used to also. Two boxes should get you sighted in and leave you with plenty to use for your hunting.

I've tested and used some of Norma's offerings in several cartridges. The performance is excellent when fired in a rifle with known accuracy potential.

Enjoy!

wish we can still get rifles for 300-400 bucks. Seems these days cheapest is going around 600-700 min.
