300 WSM Free bore

Call ptg and ask them what they would suggest as they make most of the reamers for match shooting anyways.

slslade: Just an addition to jon's advice. Freebore is probably the most important dimension, for me, followed by chamber neck diameter. As with what happens with most factory chamberings when you try to seat a bullet to touch, or for that matter even try to get them close to the lands, the bullet will fall out of the case mouth. No different than having a barrel that has been fired maybe a thousand rounds with all the erosion that results. Anyway, I seat my first bullet of choice in an empty case with the base of the bullet at the neck/shoulder junction. Then contact Dave Kiff at PTG and give him the bullet information (Sierra 95 gr. #1537, for example) telling him I want that bullet touching the lands when seated. He will put that information in his optical comparator and have the exact freebore length that is required. I will then place the phone order, but follow it up by sending the dummy round, and a sketch of the other critical dimensions, like the before mentioned neck diameter, and also the over-all chamber length, for example, 1.570" for the 1.560" case length Lapua 6BR. This method produces the exact chamber I want, not some "one-size-fits-all" that a factory rifle will have, or a chamber cut with whatever reamer the gunsmith may have laying around his shop. :)

Jon and FD. Thanks for the advise. What I am looking for is someone who has been using the 300 wsm at 1000 yds and what freebore has worked for them. Most of us shooting 1000 have been jumping the 210 bergers .040-.080. So I was just sitting here and doing some measuring (case neck length and bullet bearing surface) and I come up with about .220 freebore. So I was looking for other shooters/gunsmith with some actual experience with this caliber and bullet combination to thow in there 2 cents.

John: Good idea. I was only running a few alternatives by you for consideration. With all the members on this forum, you should get some hands-on experience answers. I personnally have no knowledge of the 300 WSM. ;)

Are you guys using short actions or long actions? Im dropping off my action at gunsmith next week to get chambered in 300wsm. The gunsmith chambered Derek Rodgers 2010 US F class winning 300 wsm. Ive got lots of questions concerning what reamer for a long action. How much free bore, to use the berger VLD's so that I can take advantage of a long action and not use case capacity because i have to keep under magazine lenght. You mentioned jumping bergers? Is that because you have to? Ive heard that, generally speaking bergers like to be jammed?

Sorry i just posed more questions, ill let you know what the gunsmith has to say about his experience and chamberings in 300wsm
