300 WSM & 230 Bergers

Looking for load data for the 300wsm with 230's and imr 7828 . what loads are working . Bergers book is 5 grains lower than Hodgdon ?

It is something you have to work up for yourself. The variations in throating makes the powder charges really vary. Depends if it is throated out to shoot the long bullets. If you use up powder capacity the load goes down. It also depends on barrel. Matt

I ran it up to 68.9 in a ladder test , that's the top end . chamber has a .270 throat. just looking to see what loads are working .

In my experience with 7828ssc in my 300 wsm I was around 69.1gr. It was fast as hell, hard on brass and shot great but doesn't hold a prayer to h4831sc. The 4831sc definitely doesn't give the speed but in my rifle it was much more accurate. My rifle has a special throat for those bullets so I don't suggest trying the same loads.

My reamer has a .280" freebore and the first barrel worked best with 68.7 7828 SSC. Great groups and ES, no brass problems but more movement than I could manage. Even at nearly 22 pounds, it would not track reliably. My solution was also H4831 SC. Velocity dropped ~85 fps and is just manageable. Also has a very wide charge window and very forgiving. [br]
After burning several lots of each, both 7828 SSC and H4831 SC seem to have a fair bit of lot-to-lot variance. Specific charge weights don't mean much, you'll need to run the series yourself.

My experience is that powders a little on the fast side for the bullet-cartridge combination produce the best and most consistent results. I'm shooting competition, so highest velocity is not a top priority. I look for candidate powders that will produce full pressure at 95-105% fill.

steve blair,
your freebore is 280 in 300WSM ???? :o :o
I DONT THINK IVE EVER seena freebore that long in a 300wsm, just asking ? if so, how did you come up with that freebore? was is recommended by someone else? mine is less than 220 with the 210 bergers.

Have you seen the length of the 230's? Gotta get that big bullet up out of the powder space. Seat a 230 with the bottom of the bearing surface at the neck/shoulder junction and see what you come up with.

swampthang: the 230 is a missle. about the length of a 308 case. I did three 300wsm's last fall in hunting rifles on 700 long actions. The guys wanted to shoot the 230's exclusively so I gave them 280 fb based on Steves recommendation. All 3 rifles shot the same load of 65.5 gr of H4831sc, 230 bergers, and wolf primers under half minute out to 950 off the bipod. The load was mild but shot lights out.

I set freebore at .280" so that I could jump the bullet up to .030" from lands before touching the donut. My loads (in four barrels) have all been between .015-.021" from touching, so it worked well. The guys are right, it is a very long bullet. My loads are ~66.0 H4831SC for 2850-2865 from 34" barrels. As Ryan said, a mild load but big charge window and very accurate. 230's can cause some gun handling problems, but if you get them flying in the right direction, they do a great job.

thanks for the reply,
i am a berger exclusive shooter. and in my heavy gun shoot the 210's .005 off the lands with less than .220 freebore running 2850 ish i know the 230 s are longer but im no gunsmith but it just seemed like a really long freebore. keep em in the x ring.

I realize you are asking for IMR 7828 load data.

For what it is worth I helped my elderly friend make an elk load with 230s in a Browning A-bolt with a 2.8" mag box and a 23" sporter weight barrel with BOSS. Assembled to fit and feed the bullet was buried in the case. (see pic) Worked up to 61 gr of RL-17 for velocity of 2720 fps. My friend flattened a cow elk at 300 yds with his lightweight sporter.
