300 WSM 230 BERGER HYBRID

Just thought I'd share my most recent findings with my 300 wsm. Rifle is a savage model 10 center feed with a 27 inch 10 twist Hart sendero contour barrel. With the 230 hybrids at a 3.220 oal I am getting 2850 fps on the nose with single digit es and sd. Barrel is still in the break in process but is already showing promise with several 5 shot groups in the .1's and .2's. So far it appears case life should be exceptional with Winchester brass showing little to no expansion at the web and primer pockets are staying tight. All in all I am extremely pleased the rifle should be a serious long range hammer.

Cool. I think this next off season I'm gonna build a heavy gun in 300 WSM and was hoping to shot the 230s.

I got excellent results with 7828 SSC and 230 Hybrids in my F-Open .300 WSM. The only problem was that 2950 fps from the 34" barrel was more than I could manage on the rest and 7828 did not tune well at lower velocity. Both 7828 SSC and H4831 SC produced broad charge windows and fine accuracy.

I agree with you Steve the accuracy node was extremely broad more so than any cartridge I've dealt with. I'm not shooting bench so I can't relate to that aspect but with a Ross Schuler brake and a 12lb rifle it is very pleasant to shoot.

After watching an F open gun torque on the front rest at a match over the weekend, I wondered why these guys dont use a bipod such as a Phoenix or Duplin for the wider stance?

Anyone tried their F open on a bipod and a rest?

Danny Biggs did with some success. Of course, Danny could probably make crossed sticks work, too. ;)

I'm thinking that when the new Joy-Pod hits the street, a bunch of F-Open guys will gravitate to it?? I'm surely planning on it.

Dan,
Me too! It would be very nice not to carry a 30 pound rest to the line everytime.

I shoot F-Open using a 300 SAUM using a bipod. Have since I started in F-Open. Bipods tend to work well on grass but can bounce on hard surfaces depending on the bipod design. The best one I have found is the MPOD built by Mystic Precision. The Rempal and it's parallel derivatives have a tendency to bounce more than the MPOD in my experience.

I am using the MPOD now because it is easy to take apart and fly with it in the rifle case which is a consideration for me. It also simply works better than my tripod rests although I have not tried the SEB rest. it is a bit of a pain to adjust on the range but it isn't that bad. Actually, it was built to be the lightest bipod out there for use in F-TR but I found it to be extremely rigid and works well in F-Open.

Just an update I did some more testing this weekend and switched from federal 215m's to cci 250's and with the same powder charge of imr 7828ssc my velocity jumped to 2930 fps. Tried several different powders including h1000, retumbo and ramshot magnum and reached close to my original velocity of 2850fps with each but ran into the problem of not fitting enough in the case. So I got the bright idea to just give cci 250's a try and it made all the difference in the world. With a 27 inch barrel this gun absolutely rocks!!!
