Trying to find an accurate load for my 1:12 twist 30" 1.250 barrel. Just about exhausted every combination for the 168 smk's. and need an accurate load for say 500 yards. Any input is appreciated.

farmer44,

PSSST, you didn't hear this from me so I'll whisper it. Listen carefully. ;)

Get rid of the 168 SMK.

Switch to either the 175 Bergers or the 155.5 Bergers. Re-16 is proving to be a good powder as is Norma URP.

I shoot the Berger 200 grain hybrid out of my
1 - 12 twist 300 WSM and h4350 with the 210 M primer. This is one of my most accurate thousand-yard benchrest loads.

I just started messing with the 200.20x in my WSM, mine is a 10' twist though but they still should stabilize. Still haven't got them to shoot inside the 230's though. I'm using BR2's and 4831sc

I have ordered a variety of different bullets so I will have lots of testing in the future. Still open to any formulas and thanks for all the feedback.

I use Winchester brass, 210m primer, 63.5 grains of h414, 168 grain CT, chrono was 2975, 24 inch barrel. Hunting rifle.

No matter what the tabled say 1-12 will not spin 200 and up fast enough. 185 and below is about all that will work with a 1-12 for long range stability.

I have a lot of experience with shooting 300 WSM in 1000 yd. competition. When you ask for advice, I think you are going to get opinions. Not a lot of facts to prove other than your experiences, which is really opinion (as in it works for me). The hard part is in judging who is right and who is not. If you don't have a proven record and that is known. Who knows, who knows what, what is good, and what is bad. But somehow it (comments) kinds of turns into a "Oh Yea, well" and off we go........well then again I could be wrong.

H4350 is pretty much the powder of choice for 1000 yard BR. Almost everybody is using it. I would stay 190 or under with that 12 twist. Like Mike says he has a Lot of experience with this case. I also shot it a Lot. Matt

I located 8 lbs of H-380 that I never knew I had. Im going to try that with some 155 gr bullets just for the heck of it. Who knows it may work.

Picked up some Berger 185 Juggernauts and 8 lbs of H-4350 and if the weather ever breaks I can get out and try this out.

Long range matches have been won and records set with its ballistic twin, the 30-338 Win Mag. 190 through 210 grain HPMK bullets through 1:12 twist barrels. They've tested about half MOA at 1000 yards.

I've got same results with 168 and 180 HPMK bullets.

Here's one of my test plots shooting 15 each of 190 and 200 HPMK bullets alternately. 10 inch X ring.IMG_0768.JPG

The 300 WSM is a better cartridge; a nonbelted rimless case.

Several top ranked Long range competitor's results with H380 and other ball powders were not impressive accuracy wise. Extruded (stick) powders had best accuracy at 1000.
