300 Winchester Magnum Stiller action

Good evening everyone,

I've jus bought a Tac 300 Stiller action with a spare 308 bolt and I was planning on building an 300 Win Mag. I will be using 220 Sierra Match king, Hornady brass, I'm not sure about the primer or the Gun powder.
I was wondering if anyone out there that has some experience on the 300 Win Mag and some data.
Please post below. thank you all.

the military has a smk 220 win mag load.
mk248 mod1
220 smk at aprox 3.5 oal
fed case
h1000 powder to make aprox 2800 in a 24" bbl
nickel plated magnum primer ( that means cci or fed)

the reamer is available at ptg.
personally I think a berger 230 is a better choice as is a 26" bbl,
reloader26,
and the best quality case you can find( the mil does NOT reload).

I have the same action with a Bartlein barrel and it shoots 190, 215 and the 230 Bergers really well with H1000.

H1000, Berger 230's, Fed 215M. There are better bullets than the 220 SMK for handloaders certainly and for anyone who has control of their chamber selection. Just because the military used the 220 SMK does not mean it's the best choice, or even a good choice.

the mil std for that load is aprox 1 moa at 600 yards.
yep aint great, but does work. I also posted a 230 berger load with rl26 that works much better. the mil has to use made in the usa parts, we do not.

What are you building it for? Hunting ? Targets? ???

If people do not know your intended intersessions, how can any advice be applied. Target is different than hunting????

When I starter reloading for the 300winmag, the 220 smk was the most accurate bullet with 75.5 gr RL-25..
3.585" coal

at what distance ?

Took it out to 800 meters for only 1 day. All the other times was at a local 300 meter range.

The 220 smk is very consistent and predictable. Very easy to find a load and doesn't care how close or far from the lands you load it.

But as you know, there are many better bullets at cutting the wind if you're shooting beyond 800.

Even closer than that you will see the performance difference. The 220 has a low BC for the weight at .629. The 208 ELD-M has a .690 BC and can be shot faster. If you went to the 225 ELD it has a .777 BC. 220 SMK is for the 300WM like the 175 SMK is for the .308. It works but there are better options out there.

maybe I should have asked WHEN did you start your 300 wm loading ?
my closest target is 875
there is a reason I do not shoot the smk 220
try rl26 and 230m bergers

That was 10 years ago and last time i loaded the 220smk was in winter 2013

I bought some RL-26 a couple years ago and still haven't found a reason to try it since I get everything I need for applicable cartridges with RL-25, RL-33, H-1000 & Retumbo.
I even used RL-33 in one of my 300winmags with 240 smk. Didn't load it high enough to find pressure signs, but found a very wide & accurate node at 2,762 fps from a 26" barrel.

The farthest I can shoot is 1,100 meters on Crown land about 5+ hours drive. So I make the drive once or twice each summer. Otherwise I end up most of the time shooting small to mid cartridges at 300 meters.

think about 2900 plus with a berger 230 from a 26.5" bbl with no pressure signs and excellent accuracy.repeatable hits at over at 1900 .

Well, I have been using Nosler 210gr RDF for F-class over here since Bergers dried up about 2 years ago now. They are available some of the time, but is spotty.

Anyway, have found these to be very accurate once the correct powder and tune was found. I do not have the best of everything in F-class, but make do with what I have.
I use a 300WM, still get good agg with it, so why change?

I also hunt with the 300WM and have just changed this year from Berger 215's to Nosler 210gr ABLR.
These are a fantastic bullet and the BC is very close to advertised. They perform far better for me then Bergers in regard to bullet integrity.

Powders I use are RE25, 81gr with 180gr AB, 78gr with 200gr AB.
H1000, 80gr with 180gr AB, 77.6gr with 210gr ABLR/200gr AB.
RETUMBO, 82gr with 210gr ABLR & 210grRDF.
All loads in Winchester or Remington brass.
My comp guns run Norma or Norma made Papua brass.

Cheers.
