300 Win Mag - what twist?

I have factory Sendero 300WM and the barrel comes to end of it's life.

I want 300WM again. Factory barrel had 10" twist. I got offer from a dealer for Bartlein blank barrel with 11" twist. Will the 11" handle bullets like A-Max 208 or Berger Hybrid 215? Cos I'm stockpiled with these bullets and don't want sell them because of unsuitable twist length.

Thx.

How fast have you been sending them? I have a 30" 12 twist and can send 208 Amax's
no problem when I send them 3000fps, I am sure an 11 twist will be fine. unless your fps is significantly lower.

A-Max 208 about 2920fps from 26" barrel.
Hybrid 215 2850fps.

I think for new 28" long barrel will be the speeds around 3000fps doable.

I would be confident enough that I would go ahead and order the barrel. The difference between a 11 and a 12 twist at 3000 fps is an extra 20.000 rpm which is huge.

Berger's web says 9" for Hybrid 215... ??

My 300 WBY tubes with the 1-11 twist are all HAMMERS at 1K!! Now, would I buy a 1-11 if I knew I was going to shoot the 215;s? No. But, if you already have the 1-11 BBL I would definitely give them a try!!

I would NOT treat the Berger twist calculator like a bible. They are guidelines, not rules!!

The 11 twist is THE go to twist for the 210 gr class bullets. Witnessed one shoot a 9 shot 2 inch group at 1000 yards only to have 1 bullet fly out and spoil a world record.

Tod, my actual barrel is factory tube with 10" twist. When it was new I shoot 208 and 220 without problems out to 1500 yards. But now I got offer from one dealer for Bartlein with 11". It's only good offer nothing more. I think in the end I will buy something with 10". Just to be sure that the heavier pills will fly.

I shoot a few 1-10's, and they shoot everything!! They love the 230's. I also have a 1-12 in 300 WSM that loves the 200 Hybrids.

I have the same Sondero barrel as you. I struggled with anything under 180 gr. I have ok accuracy with 190's and those 208 A-max's shoot outstanding. I'm running 75-76 gr of H1000 yielding about 2780 fps and i'm consistently at about 1 MOA. I tried 210 SMK's and they did not shoot well, so I stick with the 208's. Good luck with the new 11 twist, let us know how it shoots the heavies..

Even though this is an older thread. I am shooting Berger 215/230 from a 30” 1:8.5 twist. Berger says 1:9 or faster for these according to their new research on rifle twist. I went a little faster for sea level shooting in cold climates. I also wanted to try the Flatline Copper Solids 198 gr. to stretch out the 300 Win Mag.

In between a good friend of mine made for me a 28” Bergara barrel with 10” twist. Now I am developing a load for it with 215 Hybrids and Norma MRP-2. Norma powders are easier to buy here in Europe as the Hodgdon or Alliant powders. First loads showed me velocities around 2800-2820 and 0.3-0.4 MOA. Will report later.

at 3000 fps at the muzzle, 1:11 twist rpm is 196,364, 1:12 is 180,000 rpm. A 16,364 rpm difference.

Both twists have been in long range match rifles using 300 Win Mag ammo stuffed with 190, 200 and 210 grain match bullets. As well as two smaller cartridges, the 308 Norma Mag and its 30-338 Win Mag twin.
