300 Win Mag Powders

What powders do you like for a 300 Win Mag shooting the 210-240gr 30 cal bullets? I am thinking a 30-31 inch barrel in a heavy single shot bolt gun and like to minimize ES and SD.

What about IMR7828ssc?

I love that stuff for my 284 Shehane and 7mmRSAUM but I tested a 7mmBooBoo once, and the IMR7828 filled that case much better than the shortcut. According to QuickLoad, the powder charge weights are the same either way.

Just as I read that, a thought came to mind, what are the differences of volume to air space relationships between the bulkier powder vs the ssc powder? Being that most of the air would be above the ssc powder, whereas with the bulkier powder it would be more disppersed in the case. Just a thought.

Excellent question. I don't know. I have always assumed the case fill question was more about uniform exposure of the powder column to the primer flash than anything else but that is not based on any personal knowledge. A long time and highly successful prone shooter told me that they did all sorts of little things when they put cartridges into the chamber to insure that the powder was stacked in the case the same way everytime.

don't for get to try MRP. has worked for me in the 60 grn nieghborhood(9.5 twist). good luck TR dogdude

I like the estimates QuickLoad gives for Retumbo but I've never used it in any of my rifles. Hodgdon lists it as an "Extreme" powder but how is its temperature sensitivity in the real world, particularly if I'm going to be shooting 25-30 strings with sighters on a hot day?

I'm also a 4831sc and RE-22 shooter here but that's my gun. Listen to your gun, It will tell you what it likes.

i use imr 7828 ssc and retumbo with the 240 sierras out of my win mag

Are there differences that are worth noting? I like IMR7828SSC a lot but QL suggests that Retumbo may work with lower pressures for the same muzzle velocity. Have you noticed any differences in "felt" recoil between the two?

not really since it is a 22 lb rifle. i thought that the 7828 shot better. i will be switching from the 240s as soon as berger comes out with their new heavy .30 bullet. the 240s tend to copper foul the barrel real bad unlike 210 sierras and bergers that i have shot.

Thanks Cole. It 's that new bullet that has me looking at this. The BC should be pretty exciting if the orthopedic issues are managable.
