Has anybody purchased a mossberg patroit 300 win mag and have any input? Any info would be helpful like is this rifle capable of consistant accuracy at 500 yds or greater?
Ok thanks. Im mostly going to use it as a hunting rifle but I do shoot a decent amount in my free time so id like to start trying some long range shooting. I know its a little overkill for whitetails but I dont really care. Id rather have it drop where its shot than have to chase a wounded deer. I was just trying to see if anybody had any range time with it and how it performed.I don't own one. That said: I think it'll be a total crap shoot, roll of the dice to get one that shoots well at 100, let alone 500. It's a $400~ gun. It'll prolly shoot like one. What do you want it for? Be advised, the 300 win mag will cook your barrel quicker than some other long range rounds.
Okay thanks for the info! Ill try to keep all that in mind. Ill take a look at that k-31O.K. Good information. I started "accurate shooting" and getting into long range shooting a few years ago. First, I bought a couple 308s. I shot them for a while, then bought a 300 Win mag. After about 250-300 rounds, I got tired of feeding it all that powder. I went back to shooting the 308s, .223s and then found the 6br. If you're on a tight budget and want to shoot a lot, 223 is great for barrel life and saving money. An 8 twist Tikka would do well. I found one for a friend for $675, a few months ago. It shoots great, and it'll take deer with the right bullet. A 308 would cost more to shoot, but has great barrel life also. Great for deer and ammo is everywhere. Both can shoot to 500 easily. Just a suggestion. I now look at barrel life when looking for a new cartridge to shoot. When I hit the range, I'll shoot 50 to 100 rounds a gun. A 300 win mag gets about 1000 to 1500 shots out of a barrel. A 308 or 223 gets 7-8000. If you would consider something a little retro and different, take a look at a Swiss K-31. They sell for $350-400. The round is a lot like a 308. Very accurate guns. I haven't seen or heard of one not being accurate, so your chances are good for a shooter. Ammo is cheap. GP-11 surplus goes for $6 for 10 round boxes. Take a look, and remember that if you get tired of it you can get most of your money back on resale.
I shoot a couple of 300winmags and barrel life is a huge consideration if you shoot often. The heavy recoil affects accuracy negatively. Why do you think so many 223 factory bolt rifles shoot 1/2moa out of the box ??? no recoil = easy to execute quality shots !!!
One of my 300winmags weights 18 lbs and has a big muzzle brake so it kicks less than a .243 hunting rifle and it's a lazer... My other 300winmag is a Savage mod 111 I use for hunting and 1 moa is as good as it gets due to the recoil.
What would really fit your need is a 6.5 creedmoor. Hand down. Savage makes some ugly accurate affordable rifles chambered for the 6.5 Creedmoor.

Okay thanks. I bought the mossberg patroit chambered in 300 winmag about a month ago...its been on back order. Ive heard from a few people and articles that is was a good rifle for the money. Just wanted to check the forums while im waiting to see if anybody had range time.I really don't know what rifle you should buy. But I believe you would be better served by a TIKA or something else. You Don't need a Magnum to shoot the distances you are talking. To learn you need something that is easy to load, easy to tune. A 6.5 Creedmore or 6.5x47 would be a better choice. If your set on a magnum don't rule out 300 WSM, very east to tune, and real good brass. Matt
