300 win mag loading and bullet seating depth

I am building a 300 win mag, and want to shoot 220 sierras. is it dangerous or to seat the bullet out, longer that the book states, if I can ream the throat longer to fit the bullet being set out further to allow for more powder load? In other words, will having more space and then loading more powder be dangerous and could I blow the gun up ? what is best, loading to the max with the given stock overall loaded length? /and -or reaming the throat out to handle a bullet set out farther??

No it's not dangerous to seat the bullet out farther than the book states. If you get the bullet out too far you will have trouble feeding the bullets from the magazine. Yes you can have the throat reamed out so you can move the bullet out farther but once again if you get the bullets too long you won't be able to feed from the magazine. IMO having the throat reamed out for your particular bullet is the ideal setup.

As far as loading more powder and blowing the gun up is concerned you can blow the gun up with out loading the bullets out farther than the book says. Whether you over pressurize a cartridge or not has to do with the speed of your powder. If you load your bullets long and get more case capacity you may have to look at using a slower powder to keep your pressure down. If you aren't familiar with any of this I would recommend you having a standard chamber cut and just using the information in the reloading manual. That may be your best bet. Good luck, Brian Brown.

Just a word of caution be sure that's the bullet your gonna shoot if you open the throat up for it. There is no turning back. Once its set and you try to shoot lighter/shorter bullet you may have a heck of a jump to the rifling. That being said its definate advantage to have that longer throat for the longer/heavier bullet.
