300 win mag load recommendations please.

im trying to help a friend transition from hunting to long range target. After a couple range trips with my guns and a trip to eurooptic he decided to go with a gap rifle and a kahles scope. Gap told him to run the hornady 200 grain eld-x which performed very well. He now wants to see what he can get out of it. I’d like to work up a hunting load and a target load for it. Maybe a lightweight target bullet to reduce recoil if theres a bullet selection. He has access to 300 yards and the goal being to take him with me to shoot out to 1000 at steel. Also I should note that for hunting he enters in just about any large game hunting trips he can find. Aside from like elephant etc. thanks, Nick.

75.5 H1000 F215m Lapua Brass using the Hornady 208amax shoots under 1/2” from my 300WM at 300 yards

75.0 of H1000 215m Lapua Brass using the Berger 230 OTM shoots under 3/4” at 300 yards from my 300 WM as well.

I run Retumbo under 210-230gr bullets with Remington 9 1/2 primers and WW bulk brass. Half MOA load at 100, under sub-MOA at 1k off a bipod. I have read that Retumbo may act flakey under freezing, though I haven't had an issue yet. That said, I run warm but not Nuclear loads under my favorite bullet, with is the Berger 230 OTM.

I use 185gr Berger Juggs or 190gr SMK for targets, and 200gr Nosler Accubonds for hunting. All are
powered by Reloder 22. Using the target bullet, I have had a few sub 1 inch groups at 200yds.

Out of my TRG here at 4200 above sea level, I'm getting great results out of this::

Berger 210 hybrid .015 off the lands
75.0gr H-1000
Federal 215(m) primers
I've just worked up to this, with no signs of pressure yet.
I'm getting 3180fps out of it according to my MagnetoSpeed.

powder type. Some powders will not reliably ignite without magnum primers. My favorite load in the 300 WM was a 180 gr. Bulletwith 80 grs of H450 and a Fed 215 primer. Sadly, they discontinued this powder soon after I worked up that load. This load clocked at 3000 fps with an extreme spread of 5 fps. I think that is the lowest ES of any load I've come up with.

RL 22 or H 1000 and the Berger 210/215. I haven't tried the RL 26 yet......may be even better!!

chevytruck_83,

I don't know if this is what you are looking for by your post, it's just what I "think" you are looking for.

If your friend definitely wants to start out trying the Hornady 200 gr ELDX, This is the data I have for one of my rifles with that bullet:

All these loads are close to maximum in my rifle. Use proper work up to obtain your own data for your rifle.

He is using a standard rcbs die set. He said the brass grows 6 thousands when fired and another 4 after sizing. He doesn’t have a shoulder bump gauge so I can’t tell if he’s bumping the shoulder back or not. I use Whidden dies but I don’t think he needs or even wants to get into bushing sizing. Will a forester set definitely bump the shoulder back? I’ve run into rcbs and Redding that wouldn’t. In different calibers.

He definitely needs to set his sizing die to headspace off the shoulder and not the belt, or his case life will be terrible. In my 300 WM the 168 Sierra MK gives me great accuracy for a target load and with IMR 4320 (56grs) of all powders. Low recoil and very pleasant to shoot.
