300 win mag lead bullets

I want to try to venture into reloading lead bullets. if I have to resize I think I will pass, but it if I don't I am going to give it a try, but what size do I buy for 300 win mag?

thanks

A cast bullet around 173 gr weight with a gas check at .310" diameter will work with a reduced powder charge of H4895 powder.
A Lyman "M" die is needed to open the case mouth for seating the bullet without shaving lead.

I have cast my own 173 gr GS and fired them in 30-06 and 30-30.

As for buying them, maybe here? Googled it.http://hunters-supply.com/hunting-bullets-c-25.html i dont see the gas check on them? Need to have a gas check for top velocity of about 1800 fps. Bullets need lubed also. Looks like the maybe lubed?

With out a gas check, pressures need to be lower and bullet speed 1200 fps maximum.

the coated bullets are great, but be advised that they WILL increase bullet diameter by .002-.003". I've had good luck shooting the old Lyman 311284 coated in my Krag. They cast about .309" and coat to .312 or so.
The design dates back to about 1890 or so and is credited to H.M. Pope as a design to allow the military to cast for indoor shooting over the winters with their Krags, and later Springfields.
Imagine guards and reservists spending the winnter sitting around a lead pot casting their own these days...?

Best thing to do would be to make a chamber cast and measuring it .That would give relevant information concerning bullet diametre and bullet stile to fit the lead of your rifle,
Filippo

Slug the bore with a soft lead fishing weight to determine actual bore diameter. Lead bullets (boolits) should be about .002" - .003" over bore diameter.
Medium hard (10-12 brinnel) gas checked & hard lubed boolits may achive speed of over 2,500 fps without leading, assuming proper size for rifle bore. As previously mentioned, 1,800 fps is the goto lead rifle boolit load.

Are you casting yourself or are you buying precast? I have shot bullets I cast myself and then powder coated up to 2300 fps in a black out. If you are casting yourself any bullet will have to be sized. I personally wouldn't shoot anything oversized. Lead will obturate to fill your bore just like any other projectile will. Simply lubed lead with a gas check needs to be kept well under 300 WM velocities due to the chance of leading a bore up.

What is your goal with this? Hunting? Plinking? What velocity do you want to run? Casting yourself or buying pre cast?

More questions then answers, I do apologize, but I've spent some time shooting cast and can try to help.

From 1970 Lyman #45 edition. Be very careful using the fast pistol powders. Pressures go up fast with a small increase in powder.

For your 300wm, you can go from 170 to 200 gr. easily. As said, if you are going to cast your own, you will need to size/lube. Best to size to throat diameter. Most of my 30's I size to .310" to 311". What speed do you want to send them down range? You can use wheelweight alloy and if you water drop from the mold, you should be good for about 2000 fps with good lube. Faster, maybe #2 alloy. Then you have to take into account your twist. 1-10 should be OK for about 2100-2200fps.

Powder coated bullets might well be good for the 2200fps. 4895 will be your friend. You can go from 1700 to 2400fps with it. If you can find some 4759, it would be the best I suspect. In my 375 H&H I used mag primers with the 4759, really helped.

Go to castboolits.gunloads and do some searching as I imagine many have experience with the 300wm. Should be lots of info there for you and if you join, then you can ask

I would be buying, hunting and plinking, low velocity
