300 ultra mag in Winchester Model 70 Sporter Classic

Hi Everyone, question for you. Has anyone built a load for the gun I posted. A buddy of mine wants me to build one for his gun. Was just wanting some input on what bullet you were using, seating depth, powder an how many grains. Never done a Winchester Model 70 before, it has a 26 inch barrel.

I can't imagine why it would be any different than any other rifle chambered for 300 ultra mag. I always used a 220 grain SMK with Retumbo and seated to the lands. How would the loaded round know that the rifle is a Winchester, the case has no eyes! If you decide to load Retumbo, start with a charge well back from max. I had some loaded from my trip to Tennessee several months latter they seemed hot and the temps were the same as in Tennessee. Your friend may want to look into a muzzle break after a few trips to the range. I could shoot it without when I was younger, but it just wasn't a lot of fun after the first few shots.

Mag length is going to limit your performance as the RUM is a long cartridge. Some bullets will handle a long jump to the lands but some don't like it. The Berger 230 gran OTM does great way off the lands but you burn up powder space with the bullet stuffed down in the case. About 89 grains of Retumbo gave me 2,980fps in a factory Sendero. If you don't have a brake I would get one. I've seen several people get scoped their time shooting a RUM.
