300 RUM Idea's

So I see the article about the 338 Lapua improved. Am sure someone has already done that with the 300 RUM, if so what are they calling it and were the results in creating it worth it in the end??
Good or great MV
Good or great barrel life

338 Edge
338 Edge Improved
338 Tejas

Stepping up to the Lapua size bolt face
338 Lapua
338 Lapua imprived
338/378 Weatherby
338 Excaliber (a 338 Weatherby blown out with conventional shoulders)
338 Cheytac
338 SnipeTac

Regards to the 338 Lapua Improved should have good MV and barrel life. The 338 Edge is very close. You are still talking about a big cartridge and it would be easy to fry the barrel. I recently purchased a 338 that the seller failed to disclose that the barrel was fried. It's OK, Ill just change it.

After re-reading my post it kinda does not pose the question I was curious about. Is there a 300 RUM Improved???
I know people will take their RUM and covert to a 338 edge.

The 300 Rum regardless if it's made with the Bore rider Kiff reamer a +P reamer an Improved etc is a beast if you push it to it's potential.
Bonus's to the RUM over the 338's:
-WAY CHEAPER BULLETS
-Faster flatter out 1000 yards and under it's defiantly the better choice
-Will hang with a 338 out too 1500 yards before the 338 takes over
Negatives
-Around 50% the barrel life of the 338's
-Tend to be more "punchy" in the recoil department
-At the Mile plus mark it really starts giving up B.C to the 338's

I guess it all depends on your application. if your long range hunting with it and shooting targets from 0 out too 2000 I think the 300RUM is the better option. If you want to consistently bang steel or hunt and spend most of your time at over 1000 then the 338's are better. But that is all just opinion.

I agree, it is already pretty much overboard and a barrel burner. Not much velocity to be gained. Once you get so big or fast it takes a lot to gain a little. Matt

Agreed...in fact...the best thing you could do to the 300 RUM case is neck it up to a 338...the EDGE!! It goes from "burner" to "HAMMER"!!!!

I have a 375 Rum improved that I call the 375 BME and it has a case capacity of 117.3gr using Remington brass. If I neck it down to .308 it has a capacity of 114.8gr. This isn't just a 40* shoulder though, I moved the shoulder forward and reduced the case taper. Here's my 375 BME next with a 300 RUM in the middle. The case on the left is formed from 375 RUM brass, the case on the right is formed from 404 Jeffery brass which gives a slightly longer neck.

Just improving the case doesn't really get you that much practical gain. If you run it as a single shot and have it throated to run something like the 230 OTM at a 4" OAL you'd see a pretty significant improvement. My 375 shoots the 350 SMK at a "leisurely" 2950 fps from a 30" barrel. I imagine you could easily match or exceed the performance of the 300/338 Lapua with the improved 300 RUM.

Hi Yorketransport,
Can you tell me what twist you are using to stabilise those 350 gr Smk in your Ultramag wildcat?
Just to see if I can suggest to a friend to shoot them into his 378 weatherby mag.
Thanks.

.338 Edge is very common, or was 10yrs ago. See over at longrangehunting.com. Brass is hard to come by for the ultra mags these days.

The .338 Norma is a shorter bodied .588 face super-magnum, like the Lazzeroni, Lapua, & .378wby variants. About as capable as the .338 Lapua, but more versatile for bullet seating. Norma brass is excellent, the ctg is more efficient.

Lots more high BC bullets in .338 caliber. Standard .338 Lapua though has more brass and die resources available which translates to good economy. The .340Wby is damn close to the Lapua. $2/case for Norma/Wby headstamp brass and basically fits any H&H suitable action. Another avenue not discussed is the .375ruger necked down to .338; gotta go custom dies for that one though.

I hope you have a supply of 300 RUM brass before you get started. Rem did not make any last year, and will not in 2017.

I think the best way to improve a 300 RUM is neck it to a 338 or go down to a 30 Nosler. With the Nosler you can load 230s above the doughnut and still feed in a magazine. I just built a 30-28 Nosler and in a 26" barrel tom has went as high as 3100 fps with a 225 eldm, with no pressure sign. OAL is 3.7" Although it sounds like it could use some more freebore if you wanted to marry that bullet.

Don't you guys have some Norma brass available in 300 rum in the USA ?
I got hold of a hundred here, but I am saving half of them for my next barrel.
