300 rcm

Personally, I think they dropped the ball on this one.
Does anyone really think we need another short mag???
Their claim to fame is equal velocity in shorter barrels with another proprietary powder we can't get! Who cares!!!
How many of us actually shoot factory rounds???
If they wanted to do something worthwhile, they should have necked their 2.5" 375 Ruger to .338 and .300.
Which would make it basically a Dakota, but with the prospect of cheaper brass. Quality could be in question, though.
In the end, what's old is new again.

ALf, are you one of the voices in my head? I was screaming the same thing when I read the write up on the 30 RCM,inside voice was screaming, outside voice was snorting...). Anyway, I was also saying the same thing about the 30T/C. By the ad hype, we're told this revolutionizes short action, non-magnum performance by giving 30-06 performance from a case 1/10" shorter than a 308 Winchester. Talk about a radical case design:rolleyes:. Anyone remember the length of the 300 Savage? Hey, speaking of the 300 Savage, I bet that's the performance you'll get with the 30T/C if you handload with the powders we currently have available!
So now we have another short mag, the twist on this one is that you only get short mag performance from factory ammo if you get the 20" barrel. Has anyone tried reloading this with powders available to handloaders? I don't know, but I assume we're talking about something in between 30/06 and 300WM performance... Pardon me while I yawn in excitement.
Perhaps Hornaday will release their special powders to us lowly handloaders? If so, then things change a bit. Granted we'd have a very limited powder selection, but now we're talking about a handloaded short action, 20" barreled rifle performing on par with a long action, 26" barreled 300WM. Now that would be interesting. Talk about a nimble rifle with a punch! In the meantime, I already have a Kimber 300WSM, so I feel I have that pretty well covered already. I guess I'll just sit back and watch this play out. After all, if Hornaday does release their powder, then I could shoot 'Heavy Mags' from my 300WSM if I felt the need :D
Until then, these proprietary cartridges with powders that we handloaders can't use are not very interesting at all. How many ammo manufacturers are going to make the 300 RCM? I'd like more choice than that, that's one reason I handload in the first place.
