Has anyone worked up any loads for the 300prc using RL-33 or IMR 8133 powders? If so I would be interested your results or experiences. I am shooting an off the shelf Ruger precision rifle,26 " barrel using either Hornady 212 ELD-x or 225 match.
Hodgdon web site lists Retumbo, IMR-8133, H1000, iMR7977, iMR 7828 SSC, and IMR 4955 as good powders for the Hornady 212 ELD-X. They don’t list loads for the 225 ELD Match. Alliant web site doesn’t list any 300PRC loads.
If you can use Retumbo and H1000, you can probably use RL-33, but you need to know where to start - I suggest calling Alliant and / or Hornady.
I used it for 245gr Berger Elite Hunters, 26 inch 1-9.5 twist Benchmark, 86.5grs of R33/Fed 215M/3.720" gave 2912/2915/2912 for 3/4" group at 100 yards,
I started at 85.0grs and went to 87.0, 86.5 gave the best groups in my rifle.
Will RL-33 work for hunting and short range?...yes....However...it is too slow of a burn....and why put that much powder in the brass when you can run RL-26 with much less powder....have a burn rate more matched to the barrel and bullet....when you want to shoot long range precision.
If you want to put some antlers in the dirt...yep....if you want to ring steel at less than 100yds....yep....if you want to win at 1mile+ targets..NOPE!
My preferred powders are RL-26, VV N565, and a much distant third...Retumbo.
