300 Ham'r

Wish I'd had this thing back in the mid 80's Eastern Montana with all those Whitetail B tags. My Mini 14 wasn't quite the ticket for an open field poke.

I read a Shot Show rumor yesterday - one of Ruger/Marlin’s entries might be a 10mm lever action carbine. Still not much for an open field shot, but very interesting.

Feel free to drop me a DM if you have questions OR you can simply post a question on the 300HAM’R thread and you can expect a direct response from Bill Wilson usually within 24 hours at most. It is uncommon to get that much access and direct feedback… I was on the fence (pregnant with 300BO) but the interaction won me over. Now I have both, which share a lot of components.

Yup, he's answered a few of my reloading questions already. Mine has been getting a steady diet of the Speer HC 130 loading his & my copy.

For a plinking load try the Speers 125gr TNT (FMJ). They sale of 500qty Bulk Box that used to cost $75, but post-Covid price is now north of $100. Every once in a while you might find it for $90. Easy to load and accurate.

I first was shooting the Speer 130 Varmint HP Bullets. At the time I bought my barrel, all the barrels that Wilson Combat had in stock were very short barrels. I wanted a 18-20 inch, so I went with a Shaw. When cleaning I was getting tiny donuts of jacket material out of the throat. On the Texas Hunting Forum I asked about this. Bill answered and told me that Shaw was probably using one of the first run of reamers. He said after discovering this issue, they (Wilson Combat) had changed the reamer design to cure the problem. He further told me that they (Wilson Combat) no longer recommended using the 130 Speer Varmint HP Bullets due to it having very soft jacket material. He went on to tell me the issue should go away after 100 rounds or so as the throat wore in. Bill never said a bad word about the Shaw Barrel.

I am a handgun hunter, however after getting the 300 Ham'r AR15 up and running, I took it to the stand on the afternoon of the last day of deer season two or three years ago. It had been one of those years when deer were not moving well at all. The wind was blowing, and I did not expect to see anything bigger than a squirrel. Late in the afternoon a buck came in from behind me. I made the shot close behind the front shoulder to reduce meat damage. The buck ran about 80 or so feet and went down. The exit hole could have been made by a 308 Win. I am not sure if I had the now discontinued Hornady 130 Soft Point Bullet or the Hornady 135 FTX Bullets in the gun. Which ever Bullet I had loaded it worked very well.

I like the 300 Ham'r well enough that I got my brother a Wilson Combat Barrel, Brass and Bullets for Christmas last year (2024).
