300 Dakota

Hi all I am look for some info from any forum members , have they used this round and any impressions please .

I would be looking to use this for Target use at 1000yrds with the heavy bullets from Berger .

My buddy used one in Africa in an expensive Dakota rifle. I think brass was made by Norma but I'm not sure. Loaded a 200 Nosler Part. to 3000 fps in his 26" barrel. It will have a lot of recoil for target if loaded to potential. In my opinion, a .300WSM would be a better choice for your target rifle.

The 300 WSM has cheaper brass and it will last longer. It uses a lot less powder so barrel will last longer. It is way more accurate and wins and sets a lot of records at 1000 yards. It really is hard to beat at 1000. The 210 Berger is a good bullet to shoot, Matt

The 300 SAUM gives up about 75fps the the WSM but does so with 5-6 grains less powder (more efficient) and is easier on a barrel.

You may want to do some looking into that before making a final decision.

I don't get 4 thousandths throat wear in 700 to 900 rounds with the 300WSM. I don't see how it could get much better. I shoot them 10 thousandths in and check my marks on the bullets every time I load for a match. So this is actual movement of throat. Matt

As far as the OP mentioned..... You should talk to Forum member Tom about his new 30 cal creation. Basically a 338 norma necked down to 30 cal and the shoulder pushed out to 37.5 *. I believe he is running the 230 hybrids at 3200.

It will not outshoot the WSM for 1000 yard target. Barrels will not last as long. You tell MR MOUSEL I said so. If you Want power and and speed i'll take my LIMP. Matt

That load is not only a brass killer, it is an absolute barrel killer. You need to reread the remarks of dkhunt14 regarding throat erosion to learn why the WSM is popular. The recoil of a nonbraked rifle shooting matches would be unmanageable. Many superb shooters find a the recoil of a 230 at much greater than 2900 interferes with good shooting in F-class.

Ha!! Im not sure why Tom wanted a big ol 30 cal when he already has his 338 limp. Keep in mind...this big 30 cal is only for a hunting rig. Not a match gun. Yes.... You would burn it up ripping 15+ shots down range in about 6 1/2 minutes.

A few years back there was an article in a Dakota Arms news letter where someone set (at the time some sort of record 10 shot group.I think) with a 375 Dakota case necked to 300. I do not remember much about the article except that a lady shot the group. Maybe the Montana club. Not the guy that worked at Nesika.

Also there was a guy at Hawks Ridge that shot a 300 Dakota. His reamer had a non-tapered neck. I have crs and also cannot remember his name, but he was from Georgia. This was also during the time when 300 Ackleys ruled.

From personal experience ( as I have a 7mm,300,and a 330 Dakota) all are hunting rifles. Trim length is 2.54 case capacity is 97. grns. It has been a number of years since I even shot mine, but with up to 220 grn. bullet 2900 fps is about tops.(this info is from older Barnes book). Dave Kiff at Precision Tool probably still offer the straight non-tapered reamers for these.

With all of this said in todays 1k benchrest world there would be little to no gain over the 300 WSM. Maybe with 240 Sierra, or the 230 Bergers. My load for the 300 Dakota is 78 grns. of rl-22 with 180 Sciroccos. The WSM will be in the 60-63 grains with a 210.

Hornady makes the 300 Dakota brass. Norma makes the 7mm Dakota brass. We are actually working on the 7mm necked up to 30. Roughly same velocity with the high quality Norma brass. The 7mm Dakota is shorter and less powder than the 300 Dakota so barrel life should be better.
