300 Blackout Fans!

Ok, I'd like to hear from you 300 Blackout Fans. I've purchased a Remington Model 7 action and would like to build a accurate single shot. I would like to shoot this for Varmints and Paper targets from 100 to 500 yards. What weight of bullets, and twist rate for them has been you're experiences that you would recommend. What would you say would be maximum length on a Barrel for a complete burn rate.

Those of you that have used this round and are willing to share, I thank you for your time!

My .300BO is a pistol. I shoot the 110gr. Barnes tactical bullets. a load of 20 grains of pistol powder pretty much fills the case to the base of the neck. I think that you are going to spend a lot of money and not get what you expect. With the .223 bolt face, my choice would be a Wilde or Hildebrandt chambered .223 with a 7.7 or 8 twist long barrel. You can shoot the 77 or 80 gr. target bullets for accuracy at 500 yds. You could also open the full length case to 6mm and shoot 105 or 107 gr bullets. The .30 caliber bullets of choice for distance shooting are the various 155+/- Palma bullets and heavier. Check the .300BO loading data. The best that you get out of the 135 gr. MK. is about 2150 f/s. at the muzzle. That bullet goes subsonic at around 525-550 yards.
Just a thought.

16.1" barrel, 8 twist. I shot 125gr TNTs at about 2,200 FPS, 208 A-Max at about 1,050 FPS. Your intended use does not jive with the caliber in my peanut sized brain. To me the .300 BLK is a great short range cartridge to shoot suppressed out of a AR platform or a ranch/ farm/ brush rifle with an unmagnified red dot or a 1-4 power optic. The beauty is the compatibility with .223/5.56 bolts & magazines. You'd have to be exceptionally well versed in ranging and wind calls to shoot varmints past 250yds-ish. You're shooting rainbow trajectory with a lot of wind drift.

Steve,
Interesting that you would choose the BO for this particular intended use. There are far more choices that would better satisfy your needs. With that said, I have a bolt action 300 Blackout that started life as a Remington 700 .223 varmint SPS. I had Chad Dixon of Long Rifles Inc. convert this rifle. The barrel is a Bartlein 5R with 1 in 8 twist threaded for my suppressor (TBAC 30P-1), Jewell trigger, HS Precision stock and HS Precision bottom metal. I built this gun specifically to hunt coyotes at short range since 99.8% of my shots are within 100 yards. I'm using 110 grn Lehigh Defense Controlled Chaos and Sierra 110 grn varmint bullets @ 2150FPS.
I was very surprised at how well the rifle shoots with these bullets to 100 yards(5 shot groups with all bullets touching), with the added bonus of being able to shoot heavies subsonic with the 1in8 twist. Groups could be a little tighter perhaps if a higher mag scope besides the 3x9 Leupold VR were onboard. Again, this rifle was built with the single purpose of hunting coyotes here in Arizona.
Do the math and you will find the velocity of even the 110grain bullet @ even the higher end loading of about 2450 fps does leave much to be desired at the longer ranges. The cartridge is very fun to play with but has severe limitations given the size of the bullets available and the amount of powder capacity it holds. If a 30 cal is what you are looking for in a short cartridge you may be better off looking at the 30 BR. If your choice is using a .223 bolt face then the suggestions made by cdparker are the way to go. Good luck in your decision

Since you have a bolt face that's suitable for a .223 Rem on your Model 7, a .223 Rem would be a much better build for "varmints and targets" from 100 yards out to 500 yards. A 300 BLK is really an ideal round for subsonic use (best at 100 yds or less) and up close work with supersonic rounds (200 yds or less). A 300 BLK is such a small cartridge you would have a huge amount of bullet drop at longer ranges (not saying it won't go 500 yards with supersonic loads but it would fly in a very big arc).

Build a 6x 45 you have a choice of bullets from 55 to 115 gr. That is a 223 case taken out to a 6MM. No other caliber do you have that much choice of bullets. Larry

If you are simply punching paper or targets, I don't see what would be wrong with the 300 BLK even at 500 yards. However, if it were me, for 500 yards, I'd stay with a subsonic load.

Sure would be a lot of fun.
