300 ackely magnum

There are so many variants, it is difficult to tell which you are referring to. However, if I am not mistaken, the .300 Ackley magnum is a blown out, with a 40 degree shoulder .300 H&H Magnum. If it is, it is more commonly known as the .30 Super. It is essentially a .300 Weatherby Mag with a 40 deg instead of the double radius shoulder. But as I stated, there are many variants.

Almost every gunsmith had one and they are all different. In 1000 yard BR most of them disappeared. They are harder to get the accuracy needed to win. They are just harder to tune and keep that way. Also you don't gain that much because you can't use all the capacity of a 300 Weatherby case so the gain is very little. Matt

I'd try PT&G. Dave must have made the reamers. I am sure he has the records of the prints. Also didn't a 300 ackely mag with a water cooled barrel, hold the 1000 heavy record for many years. I saw it for sale on here in about 2010. Mike

I believe Joels gun was made with a different case. I know he shot way more powder then I could in an Ackley. I didn't say they couldn't get lucky and shoot a small one now and then. They just wouldn't do it consistently. I shot a 3.195 in 2005 with one but it was 44 thousandths short of the record at the time. Joels group was 3.048. The 300 WSM just shoots so much better. It is so easy to tune and load for. The brass is way better. Matt

At one time, I was going to do a .450 Ackley Magnum. This was most easily made by necking up an 8mm Rem mag or .416 rem mag case.

Certainly there are many non-belted ctg designs that offer more these days... If compelled to launch a .30cal bullet at highest velocities you got lots to choose from. If precision and barrel life appeal, there is the .30-06 AI, or its shorter bodied almost identical ballistic twin the .30/284.

Lazzeroni's WarBird .30 magnum is an interesting number as is the .30/338 Norma mag, then again if your gunsmith gives you a .300win mag that headspaces on the shoulder you'll have best of all possible worlds; lots of brass (normally) available and more flexibility.

Maddysdad- The cartridge you seek is the .300 Ackley Short Mag. #2 and was designed to rechamber an '06 barrel without shortening the barrel by one thread, as the #1 was.
It is basically the same as a .308 Norma Mag, or a .30 Belted Newton (.30/338) except Ackley used either a 28* or 40* shoulder.
Most of the well-known gunsmiths of the era, and other not-so-well-known, cut a reamer for the purpose. The biggest difference between them was the shoulder angle. The body-taper was almost identical. Juenke used a 45* shoulder, Mashburn a 30*, and Vickery, I believe, a 28*.
It really doesn't matter which one you use, unless you, for some reason, want to mark your barrel for a period-correct project. Ballistics are the same as would be the loads...the only difference being the barrel used.
If you don't mind the problems caused by being a wildcat, jump on it. I have several wildcats so can understand the affliction.
Have fun,
Gene
