30 Nosler powder choice

Thaught

Silver $$ Contributor
I’ll be shooting 215s out of a 26” Proof barrel. I have N570, Retumbo, and H1000 to chose from. I’ve read great things about velocity with N570, but also it can tear up the throat pretty fast. How many rounds are we talking about before throat erosion comes into play with N570?

I have posted these images from Nosler's website because of simplicity and ease of obtaining information. I don't necessarily agree with their data but some folks here don't agree with mine sometimes either!;):D

Note that they also only select between the 210 grain and the 220 grain bullets so you will need to extrapolate a tiny bit or start with the low end of the range. See below.

Like so many other questions about performance, there are too many variables which enter into this type of discussion. Length of strings of fire, rapidity of firing, cleaning the throat and the care applied, etc. I use N570 in several cartridges with good results and not a lot of damage because these cartridges and rifles are usually of the hunting variety, not competition. Besides, N570 will need a compressed load depending on your seating depth. Other powders will have a better case fill.

However, even in some competitions I will choose an aggressive powder in order to have the performance I think I need. Barrels are a consumable so I shoot them and replace them. I don't abuse them but I don't intentionally NOT shoot them in order to preserve barrel life.

Of the three powders you have, I prefer H-1000 which has a milder burn rate so helps figure in your throat life but performs at a good velocity.

Enjoy the process!:)

H1000 is good but don't discount N570 either, if its a hunting rifle and your not planning on banging away with it at a bench then dont worry about 570 just let it cool between shots.
As far as speed gonna depend on reamer, brass and barrel used.
