30 Grendel

I just watched Shooting USA, and the AMU is now shooting a 30 Grendel in 3-Gun competition that they developed from a 6.5 Grendel. Wasn't the Grendel developed from a 5.45x39 cartridge, and if that's true what's the difference between a 30 Grendel and 7.62x39 cartridge? Try to keep it simple for my little pea brain.

Hi, I bought a few years back a chamber reamer from PTG in 30 ppc with no throat. Is that the other name for the 30 Grendel?
Who does make reloading dies for either caliber?
Thanks for the input.

The PPC and Grendel cases are close but not the same. The Grendel has the shoulder moved forward .075", hence slightly more capacity. I can furnish you with dies for the 30 Major, which is the 6.5 Grendel necked up. The shoulder retains the 30° angle of the PPC and Grendel cases. I began shooting the cartridge in 2007. I've had very good results with it in VFS competition and also in an AR15. The straighter case walls over a 7.62x39 allow it to feed reliably in the AR15. In fact, my original concept for it is to make Major Power Factor for 3 gun competition from an AR15 based rifle. The AMU has picked it up and named it differently, but it is a 30 Major. I'm a BR person and have focused most of my efforts with it toward accuracy. It's a very good cartridge but it's biggest attribute in BR is that it can be used with a PPC bolt face, allowing a group shooter with a PPC to swap barrels and have a competitive score rifle. That and the fact that Lapua makes excellent brass for the parent Grendel make it a good platform. You can't go far with junk brass. Lapua 6.5 Grendel brass uses small rifle primers and small flash holes too.--Mike Ezell

220 russian begat the 22ppc, the 22ppc begat the 6ppc for sporter class in benchrest, the 6ppc begat the 6.5 grendel with the shoulders moved forward a tad, the 6.5 grendel begat the 30 grendel or 30 major. . Difference,Grendel, case wall straightened and shoulder angle increased. 7.62 x 39, large primer, grendel small primer pocket. Randy

I think that it depends on the manf. of the brass, as I have seen both in 7.62x39 from PMS & Rem. for use in 6mmx39
