30 caliber magnum ban at Butner NC

Effective immediately the National Guard has banned the use of ALL 30 caliber magnum cartridges at Camp Butner. NC. Apparently the Army did a safety review of all active military ranges and the bullet drop zone at Butner is not long enough to safely contain 30 cal magnum cartridge bullets. The Army is currently reviewing other cartridges to see if they need to be included in the ban. As soon as I here of any additional info from the National Guard I will post it here and on our North State Shooting club web-site.

They must of tested the maximum need safety was too short.
When we shot archery the first time they made a range for pratice with a safety area of 4 miles They were told 400 yes . I think camp perry has 15 miles . Larry

Does it strike anyone else funny that anytime a range facility bans a caliber the shooting community tends to get on forums and specifically point out where they failed to ban something else. But then we want to complain about why we can't shoot anything there any more.

Yes, not funny but very serious. I have seen this time and time again. There are some good practical arguments why "worst case" events are not the problem they would seem and I could make a good argument against worst case but then I think some things are best left unsaid.

Like I pointed out on another post on this forum concerning the same subject, to the best of my knowledge Butner has never had a serious safety incident in North State's 45 years of operation.

John,

Reading the Camp Butner Joint Land Use Study, safety incidents are not an issue. It appears noise is a major concern.

If that's the case they'll need to ban their M240s. They're pretty loud when you get 5-6 of them firing at once.

When you have an opportunity to do so, John, you might read the Camp Butner Joint Land Use Study. There is a substantial amount of information to absorb. Listed under "Camp Butner Development Plans", is this: "Camp Butner is too small to fire any weapon larger than 7.62mm/30-06 caliber". The study and development has been ongoing for 8+ years.
