30 CAL BULLET QUESTION

Does anyone have any infomation on how Speer .30 cal 168 match compair to .30 168 SMK? SMK do great out of my 700 at all ranges and conditions, however I can get Speer easier and cheaper,

THX

I have talked to some that like them,I have never cared for speer bullets myself annd I work for the parent co.The only way to find out is spend $20 and head for the range.(I don't see them winning matches)

I bought 500 of them a long time ago and I did load development in all the 308's I have and none of them would shoot them under one inch. I can get 150gr FMJ-BT to do that in most of my rifles at far less cost. I may have had a bad batch of bullets. I literally fired over 400 of them trying to make them shoot ok. The rest I just loaded and shot them at a hill way out there when it was dry. I should have done that with 400 of them.

You will never know until you try them. I personally say if it is working do not mess with it. Now if I would listen to myself I probably would be happier. Some of their bullets are very good. I really like their 22cal TNT. They are far too expensive now.

I agree with people, as I tried 200 and couldn't get them to shoot as well as surplus military ball ammo. Pretty sad as it wasn't even match ammo, and my gun is far from picky.

I still have a bunch, just hammer steel with them.

for you guys that bought them a long time ago, they may be better now as they go through a little diff process now. I weighed some the other day they still had dye lube on them but they weighed very close. I could order some and see how they shoot I guess.

Bozo, mine are from last summer, so unless it's a recent change I wouldn't bother. I had weight sorted mine just to try and make a difference, but it hardly changed at all.

I bought them as they were cheap, and I figured they would be accurate due to design. Nosler custom comp's, and even Nosler ballistic tips, shoot better in my rifle, and cost about the same. I would try the custom comp's first if you want to save a couple bucks. They are always in stock at my local shop, that's a big plus for me. The BT's can be a pain to find in 168 or 180gr.

Kenny,
No changes since last summer, like I said I work for them and I can get a good disscount but I am personaly not interested in them.I am a accuracy freak, wear barrel after barrel out punching paper, for the price you can't go wrong SMKs IMHO.

You know, I'll shoot about anything if I can get it cheap! nod nod, wink wink!

Just kiddin. I agree with the SMK's, they shoot well from anything I have tried them in. I do use Speer .311 180 grainers in all my Mosins except my Finnish 91/30 (has a true .308 barrel), and they shoot pretty well considering the rifle they come out of. Comparable to Hornady out to 300 yds.
I don't understand why the Speer match bullets don't shoot, as they seem to be of a similar design to the Nosler comp's. Mysteries that I don't understand I guess.

But that must be a pretty sweet job working for a bullet manufacturer.
I had failed to notice that you stated you worked there. I guess I need to open my eyes a bit aye? :D

Iremember when Speer 22 cal benchrest bullets were top notch and set many records. Same with the 30 cals.
I believe that it's time to look at the Equipment and quality of jacket and jacket materials. Old vern is gone now. I don't know what Gary has to do with it. This is what happens to products with great names and high quality when they get bought out. The founders have little to say about keeping the products quality up at the top.
Its made in aboard room with people who sometime miss manage a certain division . I hope that speer will get back in the shooting game again. It was a fine company with great owners

If you're looking for tiny groups.....bullets are not the place to save money. The Sierra SMK's have match proven themselves time and again, Bergers as well. If you want to save money, take Bubba cola as your drink instead of Coca- Cola!

OK, you guy were right on the money, the Speer's are not as accurate as the SMK. They did fine at ranges out to 300 yards, but anything past that their spread was tripled that of SMK of the same grain and load.

I blew $26 bucks, lesson learned. Thanks guys you know your stuff!
