30 Cal 180 grain core lokt question

Does any of the major bullet manufacturers produce a 30 cal 180 grain round nose bullet that will duplicate the performance of the core loke bullet from remington? They have always been solid performers in the 30/06 and 308 for me. They are not available for handloading and i would love to get similar performance in my 30/40 krag.

While I don't shoot them myself, I load the 180gr RN Sierra Prohunter for a friend's 30-06 as a bear load. I started loading these for him after the Corelokt dried up. I haven't heard any complaints yet.

Hornady's 180g Flat base is great for large hogs; 30/06 saws them up like a chainsaw! I believe that Hornady made the Core Loct.

ADKTIM mentions that his loading is for his 1898 .30-40 Krag-Jorgenson; they were designed for feeding RN profile bullets, and some will not reliably feed Spitzer bullets from the rotary magazine.

I stand corrected; I assumed the rifle in question was a Krag. I only knew the cartridge as the .30-40 Govt, and the rifle was the Krag-Jorgenson.

You might consider a 170 gr Nosler Partition.

Thanks for all the replies they have certainly been help full. Just to clear up some previous posts i'm shooting the 30/40 in a number 3 ruger so bullet shape is wide open. Ackleyman has been insitfull with his recipes and will be explored in the future. The hunters in NY may soon have no other option then leadless ammunition on public land ,so that might narrow the options. For the time being this old Adirondack deer tracker will be using "someones" 180 grain round nose's

Thanks all.........................GO BILLS...........Sorry had to do it

I have used round nosed 180 grain bullets from all the common manufacturers and all have worked real well. One bullet, not a round nose, which has worked very well for me in the 30/40 is the Sierra 165 HPBT Pro-Hunter. I shoot it from a #4 Lee Enfield, rebarreled to 30/40, at about 2620 fps. This would be perfect in your #3. I have shot deer, elk and bear with this bullet and had good results always. Longest shot was under 200 yards because I seldom have to shoot further than that. WH

Do you usually get complete pass through on deer with the hollow point?

Hmmm........ you have peaked my interest in this bullet. I just ordered some from mid south.

I will vouch for the 165hpbt gamekings as well. I used them in 308 for years and they just flat work well. I have never recovered one from a deer . I used the soft point first and I recovered a couple of those on shots that should have been pass thru. Switched to the HPBT version and had better accuracy as well. It put deer down with authority as well. They seem to open up well but keep going.

I used them in a 300win mag for one year, and they will leave a bigger hole, but they should as fast as I pushed them. Still didn’t recover any bullets.

The only reason I no longer use them is I do not have a 308 anymore, and I use a very heavy long range bullet in my win mag, that is bonded.

My youngest son thanks to a suppressor on his 308 is just now using 150 grain bullets. Once he can handle more recoil he will use the HPBT or accubond s
