30 BR load development

My 30 BR build is almost complete. In looking at previous match history it seems like 4198 is the go to powder with BIB 118 grain bullets. However, there doesn’t seem to be any 4198 to be found these days. I do have some BIB 118 grain bullets.

Any suggestions on powder and starting charge?

thx

Well your left with really 2 major choices LT30 or N130. You can start with 35 of either and work your way up 3/10th's of a grain at a time. Play with your seating depth also. Don't always jam either. Try jumping. The best short range score shooter that I know always jumps his bullets 15 to 20 thousandths and he always used 36 grains of N130. Your barrel will tell you what it likes.

this is a great place to start!

This is a load with that same bullet and powder for my Model 7 Hunter 30BR with a 1 -15 Twist # 4 taper 23 inch barrel. As Jim mentioned above you don't always find the best groups @ jam.

LT30 is available and works quite well. As Al said you can start with a H4198 load and should find the sweet spot @ 35-35.5 gr. Seating depth varies, I have one barrel that likes a .010 jam and the other prefers .005 off touch, both 1-17 Kriegers, with zero FB chambers.
Nice thing is it’s hard to make a 30 not shoot!

Don't overlook N120
120 is lousy in actual matches. Years ago I was experimenting with 120 in my BR and at my house and I shot some good groups. Well I went to 3 matches with it and got used. It acted wonky as they say up here. A wee bit to fast. N130 is the way to go if you use VV powder. Experimenting at your house or local range and getting good results is one thing. Going to a match and seeing how good it does is another. N120 is good for a 30 Grendel but not in a 30BR if u compete.
