30 BR history?

I have a sierra data book that shows a 30 BR Remington, I was not aware it was ever out in a production gun or ammo, it said they tested it in a savage model 11, it seems there was never ammo for it, because it goes on to say that you neck it up from a 7 BR, they show it with a 1/10 twist and list up to a 180 gr bullet, with ballistics of a 30-30.

They don't talk highly about it, it sure is a great one today in score shooting, I read the history on accurate shooter but not sure what came first I must assume the Savage test with 1/10 twist, but that doesn't go along with the article by Randy Robinnet, followed by others.

Just curious!

the 30br stuff here has a date, what date is in the sierra book ??

you typically see a wild cat, then acceptence and then production....

A full history would be LONG, and require a fair amount of research! ;) The 30BR articles, here, accurately and concisely, provide a history for the cartridge as used in, "point-blank" bench-rest competition.

By the time Sierra listed DATA for the 30BR, referring to it as [something like], "a cartridge in search of an application", for registered IBS Varmint for Score score competition (VfS), the puny thirty had already initiated a paradigm shift! :o 8) IT was a laughable read . . . and remains so. :D Take a tour of the Sierra facility, and ask the test guys about their favorite cartridge. ;)

The REAL difference between the "old" short thirties, and the "new" , of course, is the shorter/lighter bullets and the JUST RIGHT twist rates, which, depending upon the specific projectile, 1:17 to 1:19", produce Sg ranging between 1.4 - to 1.9. The light weights accommodate precision shooting, while the proper twist rates produce sure-fire stability. This model was developed and proven during registered NBRSA Hunter Class tournaments, beginning in 1997. 8)

Regarding precision grouping, HIGH QUALITY bullets - those with near ZERO center-of-gravity offset - will tolerate much higher spin-rates than lesser quality bullets. Paired with a [so called] slow twist barrel, the latter benefit noticeably. ;) RG

RG,,,I have noticed in my 6mmBR's with 8 twist that the various 60-75 gr bullets vary by bullet quality also,,,some factory bullets do well ,,especially Sierra 60 and 75's ,,,and some of the Botique "benchrest" bullets do not,,,,,,Yours and Barts and the older Fowler are excellent,,,keep up the testing and tinkering,,,you have did wonders for bullet design and bbl twist calcs. and results....Thanks for shareing your wealth of experience with us,,Roger

Thanks Randy for your info, some time ago on a forum , maybe here or somewhere else a guy said he had a 30BR with a 10 twist, my thought was what's he going to do with that, he talked about shooting a 150 gr bullet, that is when I looked around to find out where it originated, at that time I just happened to but a sierra book , all my books were old, that is when I saw the 30br remington. I had been shooting two 30BRs for a couple of years (new style, your reamer) so that is what made me wonder was it ever a production gun by anyone other than the savage that sierra showed.

so just the match date( not developement date) puts it about 11 years behind the 30br bench rest stuff.

they said the manual was produced in 2008. I find all of these wildcat rounds that are designed by individuals like the 6ppc and the 30BR a work of genius, it's all very interesting.

This - 10 to 11 years behind - sounds pretty close. Ronnie Long acquired the original [point-blank for short/light bullets] reamer in 1999 - I believe a JGS - , while, a few months later, in Y2K, I purchased a PTG (Kiff) reamer. :o The differences between Ronnie's reamer and mine were/are minor - Ronnie's had some free-bore - I believe about 0.030" - while mine features ZERO. Also, Ronnie's accommodated a maximum case length of 1.020" or, 1.025", while the [so called] Robinett reamer allows a Max. length of only 1.510".

My initial barrel (a Morrison 1:18" twist), fit and chambered by Ronnie, was a [so called] HUMMER, which held up for something over 6K rounds, and as a result of its final performance (a 500 something 1/200 Grand Agg., combined with a Hunter Grand of 499, for a 999-something TWO GUN), provided 1/2 of an IBS VfS TWO GUN record which held up for a decade, until bested by Dean Breedon's 1,000 score - I believe in 2012! Dean can shoot a little . . . :o 8)

Now, Tim, Stool was only, "twistin' my tail" a little . . . it didn't hurt too much! ;D RG

Randy Fritz , Mainville,Pa ,TarHunt, Made up a 30br for his father Randell. I beleve around 1989-1990.
Randall shot well with that rifle. i'm not sure of twist and bullets he shot, But knowing Randy,
they were light ones. And more than likley 14 twist Hart bbls.

This, I can believe, as Randy was, and probably remains an EXPERIMENTER/INNOVATOR - he just went in other (as in away from Hunter/VfS) directions! :D RG
