30 BR. 6BR, 6PPC

I recently started shooting competitive, I put together a 6BR. Still working out a good load. At the local Center Fire matches I attend are 100-300 yards. I’d say 80% of the guys are shooting 30BR. Some 6BR, 1 6PPC. The 30BRs are the typical winners. Thoughts on one VS The other?

Biggest advantage of the 30 br is ....easy to tune..... uses more than one powder successfully.........easy to see your holes compared to a 6...... negative for many is the recoil. For score matches if you want to win at 100 it's a 30. At 200 it's still king in good conditions but not so much in poor conditions, as it's behind the 8 ball. 6ppc has the built in accuracy factor but requires more attention than the 30. 6 br may not agg with a ppc but I doubt few shooters are capable of shooting the difference and ready to load brass makes it easy to jump into. If you go ppc get it with the regular size bolt face then it's simply a matter of a barrel switch. Lots of good used guns around, smartest way to start for half or less than a new build these days. A used gun will allow more funds for components and practice PLUS A SET OF FLAGS. Have fun.

30-cal bullets ( 30br, 30 Major ) are pricey but the barrels last a long LONG time. 6ppc in a lot of respects is kind of its own animal once you really dive into it the tuning and accuracy potential are addictive......I have a 6ppc 30 Major switch barrel that puts a smile on my face every time I play with it. 6BR, 6 BRA, 6 Dasher, etc. are all a blast to shoot and will get you a little further down range with GREAT accuracy when in tune..............Have fun with it.....

Rick

Relying on my memory which is a scary prospect I seem to remember seeing the results from last year's UBR Championshp and the 6 dominated in number of shooters. I tried to find it with the search function but had no luck. Perhaps jimmymac or someone could verify if I remember correctly. It jumped out at me because I would have guessed 30.

yes but that is a handicapped event not heads up benchrest shooting

Call it what you want, the numbers speak for themselves. A lot of handicap has creeped into our sport ie muzzlebrakes, 4 and 6 inch stocks, maybe even the 30 br but when they say fire all that counts are the holes in the target.
sorry but that just aint so...in all those they are still shooting at the same targets

in real benchrest the best target wins not the best handicapped target

Jeff, he's just got a hard on for something he knows nothing about, for who knows what reason. The truth is, the 30BR came along and changed score shooting(IBS/NBRSA). Everybody went to it because the target favored a bigger bullet hole. Simple as that. You and I know this stuff and I think have both been shooting both games long enough to see the progression over time. As of now, UBR is showing that a 6mm that is either a PPC or close to it is tops...because UBR allows different calibers to play on a level playing field. This isn't a new argument he's making. Years ago, people bitched about having to build a 30 to be able to compete in score. Sure, he can look at it the way he does but the ones that actually shoot it know how it is and has been, and have seen UBR progress away from mostly 30's in it, for a reason. I'm not sure if he's mad because of that or what it is really, and it really doesn't matter. We're shooting a great game and having a good time doing it...and we can do it with our 22, 6mm or our 30. In short and sweet terms, UBR didn't change the height of the goal or anything like that. UBR has not changed in regard to how it's scored since it started. You either play or you don't. Any change I've made to be competitive has been voluntary. I don't have to shoot a certain caliber to be competitive and I can test things for myself, head to head against all comers. As it should be. Same as group.

FWIW, I think Mike Shubert cleaned house in Unlimited last year with a 30 BR. He did well at the nats but mostly, he did well all season, as I recall. But most of the records are held by a 6.

"allows different calibers to play on a level playing field." and soccer kids get participation trophies because hard work and finishing first is just too hard.
since when is different targets by caliber a "level" playing field...since 6's got beat heads up by 30's in score plain and simple
you play the handicap game , if it is so fair , why do you have to constantly justify it ?
stop crying about the (handicapped) game you love
Just shut up and shoot. Come down here and shoot whatever you want. Your choice. See how this works? No excuses. Just show up and shoot your very best stuff, whatever it is. See ya soon? Didn't think so.

i was very clear,, as an adult i do not need a HANDICAP to shoot bench rest. some people seem to think their equipment/skills are not up to heads up shooting so they participate in HANDICAP sports.
as bad as western politics can be, we do recognize this aint benchrest and for the most part it aint shot out here...there was a match recently SIX shooters.
i do shoot i shot several hours today. i drove from az to alabama to shoot the nationals in BENCHREST.
i would not drive across the street to shoot a handicap match. just because you drank the koolaid, do not expect the rest of us to.
HOW COME YOU ARE ENTITLED TO AN OPINION, BUT I AM NOT??
I accept that as declining the challenge and we'll leave it at that. Not sure why you're so opinionated about something that you won't do and doesn't affect you. Good night Mike in Colorado
You've been banned on every shooting related site I know of for this kinda stuff. You just change your name and lay low for a while but you're getting right back to the same old same old stuff. I've even tried to help you on multiple occasions but you have been rude to me and others at pretty much every turn. It's not my call to ban you but I'm gonna tell you up front that I'm done with it and I'm reporting who you are on here so you can be banned again. Just wanted you to know upfront.
You don't debate or converse but you dig, demean and belittle others. Big difference Mr adult. If you get banned....IT WAS ME!
