30 BR...30 Major Max Barrel Length

I am thinking about putting a 28" HV barrel on a 17lb platform to shoot the local matches in my area. Is there any downside to either of the mentioned chamberings in a 28" barrel shooting 118's.............Thanks

Regards
Rick

I've never run one that long Rick, but I have a couple 25" LV barrels I've used with good results on my 13.5 pound gun. I certainly didn't see any downside. As long as the gun balance is acceptable to you, I think you will be fine. That said, I'm not tied to any barrel length. I'm all over the map in that regard. Always tinkering.

The stock/action I will be using is my LV (17lb) Dasher which uses a 28" HV barrel now. I have a 30 Major reamer and as much as I would be using it, the barrel would pretty much last forever........Thanks for your input. See you at the TD Lite.

Is you 30 coming to the ANDERSON CREEK Tack Driver Lite next week?

I had this same barrel length question when I asked Zack (WSMNUT) to build my 30BR. He shoots the caliber as well as building them and suggest to stay @ 24 inches or less for optimal performance.

Interesting. What is the downside other than potential gun handling problems if it knocks the balance point too far out of whack? In Ricks case with a 17 pound gun, I just don’t see an issue. Inquiring minds want to know @WSMNUT

Thanks.

Yea, Zack will have to answer that one for you Bro. But I thought he referred to that length being optimal for the total powder burn but then again I could be wrong.

That was my concern Bill, optimal powder burn with the barrel being that long......Thanks for chimin' in....

Thanks, Fuj
The 30 Major really likes the batch of N 120 I have here, and lot #3 of LT-32 works really well. I have a good amount of both. BR-4's have worked so well I have not tried anything else.....Not sure of the FB on the reamer off the top of my head. It is from Mike Ezell's reamer print. All that mixed with Hillbillies 118's is a good one. Thanks again for your input.....

In Bills case we went with a 24” barrel for handling and speed vs case volume and also ascetics.
I’ve never ran a 28” 30BR or 30 Major so I cannot say for sure how it would do or what speeds it would run. I do know that case volume plays into the equation for accuracy. My only concern with a long barrel would be if you have to back down on the powder charge to get the bullet in the speed node that it wants to shoot that you will not have the optimal case volume for accuracy.
However it may work so well you set a new trend. Worst case if it doesn’t shoot good you cut the barrel down and re-crown it! Easy fix

Here you go guys. Straight from the builder.

One of the guns I shoot at ground hog matches has a 28” HV 17tw Krieger 30 br on a 17 lb Borden BRM shooting 118’s. It is one of my long range guns that is balanced with 28 or 30” HV contour originally shooting 6br and 6 dasher. I am pretty happy with it at 200, 300 and 400 yard ground hog shoots, but I am far from a 30 br short range score expert and I have no idea if it would be competitive. I have never shot in that type of match.
I use it on calm sunny days when mirage makes it hard to see 6mm bullet holes at 400 yards. The last time I had it out tuning at 200 yards I shot three 5 shot groups that were .473”, .333” and .437” to give you an idea of what I get out of it.

Great info......Thanks, Guys
I have one ABC HV chambered up here at 23.5 + an Ezell tuner that has been easy to keep in tune ( especially with the tuner ). I will put it on the 17lb platform after the TDL match and see how it tracks.

Rick
