How about 3 groove? Are they common?
Not totally sure about twist rate.

I have never shot anything but a 4 groove a Krieger or Bartlien.
I have good barrels in both 1-17 and 1-18. Flip a coin.

Since obtaining the first PacNor (button-rifled) 1:18" twist five-groove barrels, in spring, 1997, all but one of my .30 Cal. barrels (for both Hunter Rifle and VfS) have been 1:18" twist: @ sea-level/STD conditions, this twist, in combination with FB bullets, up to 1.050" long, will impart >Sg1.4*.
There is no penalty for the HUMONGOUS Sg safety-net provided by the [popular] 1:17" twist: for bullets based upon the 1.00" jacket length, Sg1.7; on the .925" length, Sg1.9 - exit muzzel, followed by ONE precession cycle and, "imitating Rip VanWinkle" . . . just one of the, "dirty little secrets" . . . Oh, which also applies to the 18" twist - again @ >Sg1.4 . . .
The only 1:17" twist barrel I've used was a [typically excellent] Kostyshyn (button rifled)- I went 17" because that's all Craig offered. All of my PacNor five-groove 1:18" have proven their worth, as have the 4 & 5-groove Bartlein barrels, and a pair of Morrison 1:18", which are cut-rifled.
A good barrel is just that - a good barrel, regardless of cut vs buttoned vs land/groove count. RG

Very true! In the 90's Lilja made some fantastic barrels, not so much anymore.

My best barrels to date were A Hart 1-15 I bought from the internet, un chambered but the tenon cut. It was so good my shooting partner implored me to buy another and save that one for big matches. That was after I shot a 249-23 with it dropping the last record shot, it being a VH rifle. So, I ordered a PacNor. Don't remember the twist rate but it proved to be every bit as good as the Hart was. The third, what I am going to call a Hummer was a Kostysyn, It an HV barrel. That barrel had a very large bore that tapered to a lovely "Choke" at about 3" from the muzzle.
I have owned and used several 1-18 twist barrels over my 25 ish years of Benchrest and do not have anything bad to say about the ones I've owned. Some of my fellow shooters think the 1-18 doesn't shoot well in colder temperatures so believing that, 1-17's work vey well so I resorted to them going forward. Several years ago now I bought a Rattler action in an Edge stock from a lad in Texas. It came with two set back barrels, one a 1-18 and one was a 1-20 twist. I sold the rifle to a friend because I had grown to not like RBLP rifles. A friend bought it for his son to use. It shot well with the 1-18 on it. He won a lot of wood with it. Has since re-barreled he told me.
So much of what benchresters believe is born out unproven testing and just beliefs' people develop based on what someone they trust has said, often simply made up. I've busted a few Benchrest Myths during my 20 few years. The gratification to me has been seeing people come around to the truth.
The only barrel I haven't not been able to make shoot is a 1-16 twist Lilja. Never could make it shoot smaller than a quarter. I talked to Dan about it and he said he had fitted one to a 308 and he couldn't make his shoot either. Gave mine to a friend to use for a deer rifle for his young grandson.
