I'm looking for some good safe starting loads loads shooting a 180 nosler balltip and H-1000. I've been asked by a close friend to help him find a load for his new rifle and these are the components he has given me to work with. Any help would be great. I've used H 1000 in my 30/378 with 200 gr bullets and worked up to 103 grs for a vel of 3010 ft/sec. Accuracy was good but vel wasn't impressive. I would think that 3400+ ft/sec is well with in reach of this round and the 180 gr ballistic tip would be to lightly constructed a bullet for this.My choices in the 180 gr catagory in my rifle are the Barnes. Nosler Partion and Accubond and other heavy constructed bullets with powders like H-870, RL-33 Retumbo, Norma 217 etc. The real slow burners.JME

3,420 would be the target velocity on a 180 grain, working up to 100+ grains of H-1000, if you’re firm on that. Weatherby brand (probably Norma) factory loads that bullet at some $8 a round but I don’t know or see online the recipe.

Nosler Data: Start is 96 gr, Max is 100 gr for 180 gr ballistic tip in 30-378. COAL of 3.630" using a FED 215.

Loaded for a friend who had 2 different 30-378 s. Used 113 grs of Retumbo with 180 AB in first one, 3400 fps and change.

Second rifle had to be backed down to 111 grs Retumbo and right at 3425 fps. Must of been a little tighter bore.

Both of these loads were MAX and very hard on Primer pockets; about 3 firings and done. Start low and work up; we ran into some Lot variations in Retumbo that gave us a stiff bolt/extractor mark also. Kept telling friend to buy an 8 lb keg and eliminate that hassle but couldn't pry the coin out of his pocket!

Hodgdon website shows h1000 with two different 180 bullet's one is up to 104 grains the other is up to 111 grains.

H1000 is only second to 870 if you can find the 870 at all. RL22 and 869 also will give very good results. But H1000 is king.

Surplus WC 870 is readily available. Check out www.gibrass.com - usually in stock and the price is right. I use this powder behind heavy bullets in my .25-'06 and 7mm Rem Mag. Given its origin (mil surp), one must be aware of lot-to-lot variation. As long as one approaches a work-up with this firmly in mind, WC 870 will definitely do the job in large capacity cases with heavier bullets.

No, WC 870 is an eyelash faster than 872. H870 is commercial/canister grade WC 870. I did check gibrass.com and it appears that they don't have any on hand but they do have WC 860, which would also be a good choice. From what I recall, WC 860 is a bit faster than WC 870 but should be a good choice for the big Weatherby case. 872 and 870 were/are both used in 20mm, WC 860 was used in .50 BMG (M8 API).

Cases that big eat a lot of powder - if you can find a mil surp powder that performs well, the difference can add up quickly! Might pay for a good portion of the next barrel . . .
