30/376 Steyr With 200-230gr Berger Hybrids

I'm hoping someone can help with some info on the 30/376 Steyr. I understand it can be used with a 308W bolt face in a short action and provide velocities in the region of 2800-2900fps with 230gr bullets. Hornady brass is available in 376 Steyr and I see PT&G offer a reamer and gauges for it. Now that we have some high BC 30 cal bullets this caliber may be resurrected and useful in F-Class, (or hunting) with rifles using the 308W bolt face.

Anyone shooting one of these like to comment on suitability with 200-230gr bullets?

That is incorrect. The Steyr needs a bigger bolt face. It has a rim diameter of.494 as the 308 uses a .472 bolt face. A good gunsmith should have no problem opening up the bolt face. The 30-376 Steyr with bullets that heavy will be too long for short action.

It looks like the 30-06 Improved is about the best I can do with a 308W bolt face and staying with 30 cal. I have a couple of barrels and quite a few 185 - 200 Berger hybrids that will benefit from the extra velocity over the 308W case. I think I might just give the 30-06 AI a go and see what it can do for me! This should give me a second option with my F T/R rifle as F T/R does not have much of a following in Australia. I could use this combo of 30-06 AI and the 185-200gr bullets as a short/mid range gun in F-O.

No need to limit the .30-06 Ackley to a short-midrange setup. 1000 is easily obtained. I have a standard .30-06 that gives 2650 with Berger 215 hybrids. You should get 2700 with the Ackley.
