30-284....lots of fun!

I had the equipment to do this little project, so here we are. Identical rifles at 18.6 lb each
HV 28 inch Kreiger barrels 9tw....yellow gun .200 FB that actually comes out about .215
Brown gun throated .060 longer. .342 no turn neck
Yellow gun....200.20x....1/4--moa in 12-15 sidewind and 5 sh groups.....200/300 yards
Brown gun....230 Berger and A-tip .30 moa same conditions and 5 sh groups
Both easy to shoot, recoil not a problem. This could easily be achieved with 30-06 or
ultimately just build a 300 WSM like everyone else. Not much testing with 215 Ber but shot well.
A-tip shot right with 230 Hyb. Once again, heavies really handled the wind. The 200.20x is one
of the most accurate heavy bullets I've ever shot.
Now, what is impressive is accuracy at lower node, 2740-2750 with 200 and 2650-2660 with 230's.
You can shoot faster just as 308 guys but at expense of brass and barrel life. Using CCI 200's,
H4350 WITH 200's and H4831sc with 230's after a few 10 shot groups on each, barrel was still cool to the touch
at 77F outside temp. After many different combinations, I'm more impressed each time I go out. Both rifles
are easily outperforming my Dasher in the wind. 284 Lapua brass easy to neck up.... my main goal was
to use barrels, actions, powder, bullets, primers that I already had and go have fun. Wish I had done it yrs ago!
Bullets in 3rd pic...left to rt....200.20x, 215, 230 hyb, 230 A-tip

before you f class guys started shooting284, we use to buy 284 brassm neck it up and shoot it in our swiss k-31. the good news is we can now get better quality brass but boy does it cost!

Back probably 25-30 years ago when I got my 7.5 K31, that is what guys did to get boxer primed brass for a 7.5 Swiss, before Privi made brass for it. Simply run .284 brass in a 7.5 Swiss die. The case has been around since 1890.

Is your 200.20x load a full case of h4350? And do you mind sharing how much jump you have with that bullet and throating?

I have a 30-284 variant reamer set on the way :)

The higher node I had been shooting was 54.0 which was not compressed, but just recently shot fantastic groups at an even lower node of 52.6 at 2648 fps. Not fast but deadly accurate with bullet just touching lands. FYI, this bullet shoots good jumped or touching. Jumping at .050 gave almost same results.

I chased every die around for 7.5x55, all of them gave less than stellar results. I was told the 30-284 dies would not work……..well I will just say I no longer have a half dozen 7.5x55 Swiss dies.
What ever you want to call it, it is a well kept secret of how well the cartridge shoots and performs.

well its a long story but its true. there are different chambers, early and 1931
loading for a 31 needs 31 die or you will over size the brass. for the longest time only redding sold a 31 die
all else were 7,5 swiss. now lee has one not sure who else

These rifles were built because I had most of the components and recently stopped shooting competition. I believe the heavies do a bit better in the wind everything being equal....and I realize that many will debate that. To my surprise I brought the load all the way down to 53.8 H4831sc in the brown gun. It shot one hole groups at 200 yards at 2470. Sent it to 500 and was stable with exact come ups for .815 BC. This gun is identical to yellow gun with .260 throat. A group of us get together at private facility and shoot long distance and just have fun. I honestly believe I could be competitive with these rifles out to 1,000 yards and barrel life will probably be unreal. However, those who are winning with many other calibers know what they are doing and have no reason to change. My 7 saum with 180's is hard to beat at 1,000, but I'll be having me some fun with about the same recoil at 5-600 yds in the wind! Many years ago I quit chasing velocity!

The 7.5 Swiss Redding dies are the ones for the modern K31. The others undersize the body and will split necks. I am guessing that those would work. I am guessing you are using bushing dies for the .284 with a neck for the .30. Either way, it sounds like you hit a home run!
