30-06 with 30 degree shoulder?

Anybody ever heard of this? Not asking about a AI.

Thanks

Yup... it is a Mashburn.

He did a lot of wildcats, and prefered the 30 degree shoulder.

Thanks. I started reading up on shoulder angles and found this:

and this:

and this

Main points seem to be that a 40 degree shoulder (AI) has possible feeding, turbulence and doughnut issues.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I was thinking of doing a 7mm-06 with a 30 degree shoulder. Not sure what to call it...7mm-06 TFI (The Fitter Improved? 8))

Thanks

I think you are late to the party...

The 280 Ackley has a long track record for great accuracy and it feeds fine. Other than having your own wildcat I'm not sure it makes much sense.

As for turbulence, the excellent accuracy of the 280 Ackley is well known. Start with factory 280 Ackley brass and the doughnut is a non issue. I've built at least 5 280 Ackley's for clients on Winchester's, Remington's and 1 Mauser and every rifle fed great with 0 feeding work. I have no doubt that a 30 degree 7mm-06 or 280 would be an excellent cartridge. Better than one that we already have? I don't know, my guess is it will probably be about the same. Have a reamer ground and dies made and let us know.

Rather than a 30 degree 7 ought six, consider a 284 Shehane.

Lots of good data available. Lapua brass. Diies easily available.

I would look at what brass you can get first. I do like a 30* shoulder and it seems to work in a lot of cartridges. I have been thinking of building a 6.5-06 30* IMP using 270 win brass, I like a long neck on cases. Laupa does make nice 30-06 brass and I have used it for 6.5-06. If you go with the Nosler 280 AI brass be aware that it is slightly different than the wildcat 280 AI, that is what I heard from people online. I use a 7mm Rem Mag and Berger 168's for long range hunting, my hunting rifle (8 1/4 lb) will shoot sub MOA @ 600. I had thought about a match rifle using my 7 Mag reamer, it is very easy to load for and shoots good. Dave and I worked out the reamer with a min neck and throat for the 168's, I do neck turn Winchester brass until it almost cleans up but can still shoot some factory brass if needed. In a 24.5" Kreiger barrel it chronographs at 3050 ft/sec. without showing pressure.

interesting. Hard to find any references to a 30-06 mashburn. A few references to a 30-06 icl but not sure of the dimensions. Anyway, a 30-06 improved 30 degree shoulder would be interesting, but whether it would give any real world benefits over ackley,s 40 degree version I don't know

My first build was 300HH Mashburn That was 53years ago. Mashburn and Ackley were well known back then. Ackley has some of Mashburn loads in his books. Merry Xmas Larry

there was an article in precision shooting magazine a few years ago that had one featured on the front cover. very nice looking rifle.
