30-06 brass into 280Rem brass

I have been necking down 30-06 brass into 280Rem brass and hand loading for hunting, without fire forming. The results have been good accuracy, at least, for deer hunting.
Does anyone else do that without fire forming and what are your results?
Before I hand load the formed cases, I do trim to size.
Steven

As long as you trim and theyre straight enough for your needs no problem. Watch that length, itll cause extreme pressures if it gets too long

Trim length for 280 Rem is 2.530 same as for 270 Win. Check the recent thread on "Best Brass for 270 Win"

I have shooting Rem. Model 721 in 280 for about 40 yrs. and have tried the conversion several times. None were a real good replacement. I have found that the Winchester brass is excellant, especially after formed to the barrel in my old gun.

She is getting on, but with Sierra 160 SBT's, and if I do my job, best groups to date are under .350", five shot group from rest at 100yds. Bifocals are making that nearly impossible now, but the baby son comes close, about .450"

30-06 brass is .045" shorter than 280/270 brass, in my experience, so using the .280 brass would give you more neck.

I use a lot of Norma 280 brass in my straight 280 and as a parent case for
a 6.5 wildcat. Luckily, I picked up 500 Norma 280 brass, at a ridiculously low price when Shiraz was closing down.

My custom 280 shoots the new brass with the 162 amax and IMR 7828 very well to 200 yards with a slightly reduced load, plenty good for hunting. I much prefer the consistency of formed brass for 4-600 yd shots. The 280 Rem is one of the great hunting cartridges.

I have done 30-06 to 270 and it works.
I have done 8mm to 257 Roberts and it works.
I have 308 to 260, and it works 90% of the time. Miserable over pressure the other 10% when the bullet gets pinched by a thick neck.

A set of pin gauges is nice for measuring actual chamber neck size.

Any time you reduce the case neck diameter to a smaller caliber the neck gets thicker. So having enough chamber neck clearance is also important.
