30-06 Barrel Chamber Question

The SAAMI spec I believe allows a COL for the 30-06 of 3.340. The Hornady Handbook, 10th edition, lists on page 520, the COL for the 212 eld-x as 3.400.
Will that bullet/cartridge fit in a SAAMI spec chamber? I'm thinking that even if the 212 eld-x is 3.400, the cartridge will go into the chamber until the bullet ogive contacts the rifling and possibly allow the 3.400 length.
Am I on the right track?
Before I order my new barrel I'm wondering if I need to all for some freebore.
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks

Probably not. But really more dependent on the bullet shape. I have 5 30-06s and all needed freebore cut so I could seat the bullets where I wanted them. And also need to take magazine length into consideration. Remington rifle will have a longer mag then either Winchester or Mauser. Mine are cut so the 180 Sierras are seated at the base of the neck. Then I can use either the 200 gr or 180s. When loading the 200s the boatail will extend slightly into the shoulder area and still run thru the mag. On Winchester rifles I REMOVE the magazine block and shorten the bolt stop. Remington just need to have the freebore recut.

Never shot the bullets your talking about. Mine are just hunting guns. Sierra 180, 200 and sometime the Nosler 220 gr bullets. With H4831

I'm using a Savage 110 long action and plan on a 27" or longer bull barrel for target use only. I will load single shot, not use a magazine. How much freebore did you add on your 30-06s?

Nothing too exact with that opertion. Used a reamer with a dummy round.. doesn' need a lathe you can do it at home if you pay attention to what your doing.

I have a 30-06 aquired in a trade about a year ago. The rifle was built by SAC on a Defiance long action in a Manners mini chassis. My original intent was to sell the rifle until I took it to the range and discovered how accurate the gun is. More to your point the oal of my loaded rounds with the Hornady 208 ELD is 3.510. The rounds feed flawlessly using AICS 300 Winmag magazine with the feed lips bent in to work with the 30-06. Not being the original owner I do not have the specs on the freebore. Mark of SAC built the gun and is a pretty good guy and would probably be willing to help you. If you email him he will definitely get back to you. I think the 30-06 is a really great round and for the most part over looked when it comes to building a precision rifle. Feel free to PM me if you like. Thanks, Ray

Ray, I do not know SAC. I believe a 30-06 can be accurate. I want to shoot heavy bullets so I figure I need freebore to allow for more powder/less pressure/greater fps. Right now I don't know what I don't know and am trying to get the info I need to get my barrel maker what he needs to make my barrel. If you could give me more info on Mark, either here or on a PM I would appreciate it.
Thanks!

What is your base to ogive?

Note the 30-06 SAAMI spec chamber has no freebore. The angled throat starts at the chamber mouth.

A 1:11 twist and 1.25 to 1.50 degree throat out enough to seat 200 grain bullets about 3.5" COAL would work. Load 56 grains of IMR4350 which was a favorite in the days when 30-06 ruled.
