30/06 ammo range report

I purchased a 1964 Remington 700 30/06 20" barrel in good shape. Unable to leave well enough alone I installed M-16 extractor, Trigger Teck all weather trigger and had the rifle glass bedded. Bought some expensive Sako Super Hammerhead 180 grain and went to the range. Best groups were 2 inches. Next day I tried again using inexpensive Winchester Power Point 180 grain. First group was 5/8". Made my adjustment and second group was 1". Also when digging out bullets from heavy gravel backstop the Sakos had all lost their core, should not happen with a bonded bullet. The Winchester's were mangled but intact. Go figure.

As was pointed out to me a long time ago,"dirt and rocks make a poor ballistic medium". I called a company about the bullet not expanding and was politely told I wasn't using the right medium which is and was right. The winchesters have shot good out of several different calibers. What they say is true, a gun is like a person, everyone is different even if it's made at the same time. Be glad the Winchester shoot better than the Sako, you can shoot more and do it cheaper.

This also got me thinking about a long time ago when me and my dad killed lots of moose using Model 100 Winchester and BLR in .308. Ammo was always 180 grain Winchester Silvertips. One or two lung shots and those moose always died within sight.

I bought a case plus of the super hammerhead from Beretta USA last year for under 20 bucks a box. Figured I'd use it for elk last fall. I always test bullets in water jugs to see what it will do, and the core came out of it also. Penetrated deep but didn't stay together. In my christensen classic it chrono'd almost 2900 fps. I tried it in another 30-06 I have and it clocked exactly as advertised at 2740. That's when I found out my CA has a tight chamber and doesn't need as much powder to hit velocity.

Needless to say I was a touch upset it didn't stay together but it will be more than fine for deer and for my mossberg my father bought me years ago.

I guess we have all tested big game ammo on something that was inappropriate. When getting ready to elk hunt I shot my 338 win mag at at 671 Detroit diesel engine. My partition did well against the block, and the elk.
