30-06 20' tube

short barreled 30-06 20" for hunting mid to mid long range meaning never beyond 400m, mostly inside 300.This thing is made for getting into high and tight places. Caries easily but have I shorted myself too much in the barrel for its intended purpose? Is the barrel too short for the 400m shot on deer?Bullit weights will be between 140 to 168 range.

No your fine even to 500.i would have opted for a 22" for a short barrel but it should work for the bullets you want to shoot.your bullet will still be traveling faster than a 30-30 at 250yds by the time yours hits the 400-500 mark probly so its a go in my book.plus look at all the deer and antilope shot a 400-500yds with a 22" 243 pushing a 95gr pill of all sorts.

I have to agree with Austin because I shoot a Browning Safari 30-06 with a 22" barrel and love it. I've tried a 20" barrel and you lose so much velocity with it. It's surprising IMO. But I would opt for a 22" barrel but all I'm saying is happy you didn't get the 18" carbine.

Glen...

The 18" 30-06 barrel is ballistically equal to a 24" 308, and a 24" 308 will drop deer at 400yds all day long - don't worry, you will be fine. ,Wear ear plugs;) )

There is no "big loss" between 20" and 18".

My 21" .30-06 shoves a 165 Nosler Partition out the muzzle at 2750 fps with a favorite load. No problem. Plenty of velocity for 400+ yd shooting. My rifle has the stubby tube so that it too is nice for carrying in those tight, nasty places. It does however work fine when a longer shot is required too.

A mere 100 fps one way or the other doesn't really matter much at practical hunting ranges.
