30-06 @ 1000 yrds bullet selection

i have a buddy who wants me to teach him to reload and get a round for killing paper at 1000 yds. he ask me what bullet he should try first and i have no experiance with 30 cal so i didn't know the answer. i know there is no clear cut answer but im looking for a starting bullet.

22 inch 1-10 twist barrel.

im looking at the 175 smk should i look at a diffrent bullet

The 190 or 200 Sierra will be a better choice. H4350 will be a good choice for powder. The barrel is a bit short, but it'll do to learn.

he is wanting to try to compete. i told him his equipment will be sub par compared to others, but so is mine. i still use a bag of feed corn as a rear bag, but im not trying to make a living at it and its still a blast so who cares if i loose. he is of the same frame of mine but i do want to help him do as well as possible without a new gun and all that. but its all about the learning for both of us rookies.

i might have to try the 190-200 serrias. i use h-4350 in my 260 and have about 25 lbs left so he shouldn't have to hunt powder for awhile

A good attitude like yours and a willingness to learn are a lot more important than a few more inches of barrel. I suspect you'll both have a great time shooting, learning and loading.

i did my first f-class a month or so ago. after hearing how much fun i had he decided to give it a try. i was absolutly amazed at how helpful everyone in this sprot is. its almost like its not a competition at all. mabye that was because they knew i had no chance but everyone was more than willing to share wind reading tips and loads i should try.

+1 on German's post. My shooting skills seem to be lacking, my loading skills are somewhat advanced. I can say this! By keeping a good attitude and willingness to learn. My skills are becoming more and more advance quicker than I imagine. One thing I have prefected is asking those dumb questions and looking like a idiot, ;D but keep a good attitude about everything you will find those good experienced guy's offering great info!

What ever you shoot enjoy it!
Good luck to you and your friend!

Tomorrow is my 1 year anniversary of being strapped in to a sling with iron sights. With German and all of the shooters on the line it has been fantastic year of learning. I hope that everyone finds their club and it's members as helpful as they are in Phoenix. Over 5000 rounds down the barrel and the 1000 yard line is one of the most fun and the most difficult. I made Expert in Long Range.

Chasing my master card this year.

Happy Anniversary John! So tomorrow makes one year with you and 25 with Lucy... She may still have the edge on you!

Your progress has been great, right off the bat we were able to show you that irons were nothing to be afraid of - the wind is a lot scarier!!! Of course you had that one weak moment when you strayed off the reservation, but at least it didn't last too long! ;D

german, i liked your new article in The Rifleman's Journal. I have been testing some Berger 90 vlds (.224) out of my 18" 1-7" douglas barreled ar-15. So far, at 100 yards everything looks great. Curious to see what happens at extended ranges. (sorry to put this post on a .30-06 intended post).

Thanks Cole! In any caliber, the heaviest bullet you can use is always a good idea for long-range, as you know. A 90 in a .223 is very much like a 200 in a .30 cal.
