3 Lug vs. 2 Lug Bat Action HELP.......

Anybody got a 2 cents worth over which Bat action would be best for a 1000 yd. Dasher. Ease of opening without disturbing setup is a concern, thanks Farmer

3L has same opening force in a shorter throw. So, quicker, but fractionally harder lift.

Some of the two lugs are available with the roller cocking piece that was developed for the three lug. I think that one of these would be the easiest to open without disturbing the bags. You can get it done with the three lug if you come up with a way to open the bolt by placing your thumb somewhere on the action, so that you are not lifting the rifle by the bolt handle.

Thanks Guys, I using my left thumb now on a two lug Pierce long multi-flat, placing it on top of the scope wile I lift the bolt with my right thumb but it seems awkward and slow. John

I have two F-Class rifles with BAT 3LL actions. As Boyd said; put your thumb on the bolt shroud, push down with the thumb and rotate your hand. My .300 WSM and .284 Shehane open with my index finger.

I put my right thumb on the tang and lift bolt with my index finger. Fast and easy.

I am having a Dasher barrel fitted to one of my BAT M OCTPIC actions. My smith, who is a Dasher expert, tells me that I may need a different extractor to get the small case out of the thick receiver. I have the extractor that is milled into the face of one of the lugs. I was told the other type gives a different ejection angle. I don't know if this is a problem unique to the BAT M or whether the other thick receivers would potentially have the same problem. I am going to give it a try with my bolt but it might be worth asking BAT first if it makes a difference with the shorter BATs and the shorter cases like the Dasher.

I have shot them both, the easiest opening is a 2 lug with the roller bearing in the cocking piece. The 3 lug was noticeably stiffer. I say go with the 2 lug.

I have a 3 lug BAT in a 6br and have no issues with it but if I had it to do all over again I'd do a 2 lug.

You need an angled ejection port and a Sako extractor to eject a BR/Dasher case. It isn't the thickness of the action, it is the LENGTH of the Mod "M" action.....8.5". I went through this when I built my Dasher. Took and extra year to get the job done because I had to re-order the CORRECT action.

MEASURE TWICE....CUT ONCE!!!!

The first Fclass rifle I built was on a BAT 3 lug long action in .284, I then chambered a Dasher barrel for that rifle to make it a switch barrel. Since then I have had a 2nd fclass rifle built on a Barnard action in .284 so my BAT is a Dedicated 6 Dasher now. I have not had any issues with extraction or ejection with my dasher in the Bat 3LL action ever.

Both the 3-lug and 2-lug BAT actions are great. My Dasher is built on an early 2-lug model B with the Winchester type extractor and the forward ejection port. It ejects flawlessly with both the Dasher case and the PPC case. (the rifle is a switch barrel with Dasher, 6PPC and .22 PPC-short barrels). A friend has a 6 BR with the 3-lug action (w/roller) and it too works great. Either one will serve you well. Good shooting.. James
