Gonna throw this out here I need some technical advice.
Right now im shooting a 284win 180vld on a 5 Krieger A3 stock and surgeon 1086LA. I went this route to have enough gun for Elk but still have fun shooting target which is most of the year like everyone else... Hunting being only a month or so for me.
Finding myself wanting to get more into target I would like to build a more target oriented gun and drop back to a 6mm. Im curious to know if I can do a switch barrel on a 284win and then say a Dasher or BRX kind of caliber? I haven't decided but want to go one of those two.
My 284 with 180's COAL is 3.182 I believe so running this in a short action is not gonna work.
Going the other way, running a Dasher in a long I don't find a lot of info on it as obviously its not the norm. if this will work then this gets a lot easier. i'll keep the action I have and the rest of this post can be thrown out.... I'd just need to cross the bridge on the magazine area of the stock with 2 different cartridges.
But after talking to defiance they have a intermediate action call a Deviant Hunter XM. The rep says in a nut shell they took a short action and added exactly 1/4" to It and make bottom metal for it so it accommodates a 3.20 mag. This sounds like my 284 180vlds would work in this....
If the defiance is a better fit i'd sell the surgeon and A3 and switch to the Defiance and go for a more target friendly bench type gun. Then I can just screw on the 284win and shoot it for a couple months during hunting season then go back to the Dasher type case for the rest of the year...... yeah the target gun will be a little awkward during elk season but heck I can deal with it for the weeks worth of hunting.
The goal being not having to invest in a 2nd complete full custom gun which would be option B.
Questions:
1.What is the best way to go here, make a dasher work in the Surgeon long or go the Intermediate Defiance XM or.....something else.
Will it be possible to just interchange barrels and mag boxes to accommodate each cartridge or is the magazine area gonna be a problem if im having to run two different magazines due to two different cartridges lengths etc all on the same Stock.
