284 Winchester

I am getting ready to gather parts for a new build. and I am thanking 284 Winchester this time around. so my question for you good shooters what barrel twist would be most appropriate for the berger 180gr hybrid? I was thanking about going with a bartlein 1:8.7 twist. so what twist would stabilize this bullet? what say you any help would be much appreciated

I shoot the 180 hybrids out of a 9 twist. I'm 1500 feet asl and they stabilize fine. Btw it's a 32in barrel

I’m at sea level and at the lower temps the Berger stab calculator says full stability is not achieved, last year I shot in all weather conditions with a 9tw and didn’t have any obvious issues. I’ve gone to an 8.5tw for my next Barrel just to be on the safe side... hope it shoots as well as the 9tw does!

I built a wildcat 284INCH (uses 308 brass) early in 2016 specifically to use Berger’s 7mm 180 Hybrid. Load testing proved H4350 would push them to 2,800 fps w/o pressures issues in the 30” Bartlein 1:9 I started with. Accuracy @ 1,000 yards earned me a National Record tie one Sunday in late June, 200-15x using open sights & a sling.

I have a 1:8.5 Brux I expect to get chambered someday, but for now I’m focusing on Palma only: 155’s, open sights. As has been said, anything between 1:8.5 & 1:9 should work fine.

We list an Optimum Twist rate of 1-8 for the 7mm 180 Hybrid bullets. This is based on a worst case scenario of 59 degrees at sea level. Run your data over the TWIST RATE CALCULATOR on our website :http://www.bergerbullets.com/twist-rate-calculator/ . BE SURE TO ENTER THE LOWEST ALTITUDE YOU MAY SHOOT AT to get the information you need. If you have any questions please contact us here or at support@capstonepg.com

Yep I plugged in lowest altitude , lowest temp and lowest speed (2740fps) bullet would likely to be shot in/at and the TRC gave me an 8.5 twist..

Thanks for posting that!

I was thinking a 1:8.5 would work when I brought that Brux blank, but at a little lower velocity at a bit less pressure. We’ll know once it’s fitted but you’ll get there first so let us know, eh!
